US PC Charts Apr. 19-25: Lich King tops Sims 2 Double Deluxe

Blizzard's second expansion for juggernaut MMOG continues reign as NPD's weekly recap sees no big movers.

It wasn't a particularly exciting week in the realm of PC sales, given that every game that appeared in the NPD Group's sales recap for the week of April 12-18 reprised its performance for the week of April 19-25. However, some small shuffling did occur during the week, though front-runners World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King and The Sims 2 Double Deluxe retained their hold of the top seats.

Both Lich King and third-place finisher World of Warcraft: Battle Chest saw significant price discounting during the week, with NPD reporting an average sale price for the two games down about $7 to $31 and $32, respectively. Left 4 Dead held firm at its $29 price point, placing fourth. Empire: Total War, Demigod and Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor slotted into the fifth, sixth, and seventh slots, respectively.

Blizzard Entertainment's stand-alone World of Warcraft once again joined EA's Spore and The Sims 2 Apartment Life at the bottom of the NPD Group's chart for the week.

Week of April 19-25, 2009*
TITLE - PUBLISHER - AVERAGE PRICE
1) World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (PC) - Activision Blizzard - $31
2) The Sims 2 Double Deluxe (PC) - EA - $20
3) World of Warcraft: Battle Chest (PC) - Activision Blizzard - $32
4) Left 4 Dead (PC) - EA - $29
5) Empire: Total War (PC) - Sega - $50
6) Demigod (PC) - Stardock - $39
7) Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor (PC) - THQ - $29
8) World of Warcraft (PC) - Activision Blizzard - $20
9) Spore (PC) - EA - $47
10) The Sims 2 Apartment Life (PC) - EA - $20

* The above chart reflects the NPD Group's sales data drawn from a cross-sampling of retailers nationwide. Therefore, it does not include game sales through nontraditional channels such as digital distribution.

    @df-1

That would be a good joke. Maybe let's add Diablo, maybe Starcraft 3, unannounced Blizzard game and another WoW expansion. That would be funny

NPD really needs to start tracking digital distribution some how. I know many places like Steam dont give out numbers so they are going to have to work it out or something but just showing the same Brick and Mortar PC sales is just showing the same population of (MOSTLY) casual gamers buying games which is why Sims makes it up there so often. I bet if we had dig dist. showing it would be a very VERY different picture.

Steam is where its it. Voice chat, Demos, virtualization of your game library and instant access of any game u buy through it! I just started playing Eve Online, I highly reccomend it, $14.99 through steam for the entire game + all expansions. 21 day trial account going on now. Spreadsheets in space!

How is Left 4 Dead at 4 even w/o counting digital distribution sales? 90% of its sales are from that...Just ask the people on the boards, nearly everybody there bought it on steam. Not to mention, it was 40% off last weekend and I know there was a huge spikes in sales at that time.

And what daabulls23 said is true as well. The entire Orange Box (Half Life 2, HL2 ep1, HL2 ep2, Portal, and TF2) was just 10$ recently!

I am surprised that Warhammer 40k Dawn of War 2 isn't on this list. A very good game many are missing out on this title, which I am still playing and having fun.

    :
One more month until we see Sims 3 at the top of the charts for months and months and months.

heh, more like years :p. Honestly though, you have to remember that this chart doesn't take into account digial distrubtion, so Steam and other services online don't count.

Now that I think about it, it could equally mean that the general interest in PC games has diminished far beyond my worst fears. MMOs/casuals pretty much dominate this chart, meaning that if consoles could run MMOs I'd be talking to myself right now.
