US PC Charts Feb. 22-28: Dawn of War II still on top

Relic's sci-fi RTS retains top billing in The NPD Group's otherwise uneventful weekly retail sales recap.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II has been on a tear of late, scoring top billing in not just the US' PC charts in its opening week, but also those across the globe. In the US at least, THQ and Relic Entertainment's far-future sci-fi real-time strategy game continued to sell well during its second week on the market, with the NPD Group reporting today that Dawn of War II led its PC sales charts for the second week in a row.

In fact, February 21-February 28 looks very much the same as the week prior. Mimicking the mid-February period, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, The Sims 2 Double Deluxe, and The Sims 2 Deluxe slotted in descending order behind Dawn of War II. Also-returning favorites World of Warcraft, the WOW Battle Chest, and Spore swapped positions with one another, falling in respective fifth, sixth, and seventh positions.

The Sims Carnival: Snap City, released to abysmal reviews in January 2008, was one of two games to creep back into the chart, the other being Blizzard's best-selling WOW expansion, The Burning Crusade. The Sims 2 Apartment Life rounded out the week's chart in ninth place.

Week of February 21 – February 28, 2009*
1) Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II (PC)
2) World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (PC)
3) The Sims 2 Double Deluxe (PC)
4) The Sims 2 Deluxe (PC)
5) World of Warcraft (PC)
6) World of Warcraft: Battle Chest (PC)
7) Spore (PC)
8) The Sims Carnival: SnapCity (PC)
9) The Sims 2 Apartment Life (PC)
10) World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (PC)

* The above chart reflects the NPD Group's sales data drawn from a cross-sampling of retailers nationwide. As such, it does not include game sales through nontraditional channels such as digital distribution.

It's great that Dawn of War 2 is doing so well. Blizzard will definetly catch up when Starcraft 2 is released.

It won't matter when SC2 and D3 are released blizzard will probably have all 10 spots.

its kinda sad what PC gaming has come to. WOW and its expansions + The Sims and its own expansion contribute to 80% of this list. Nevertheless, DAW2 is a beutiful game (idk if you can call it an RTS but it is great whatever it is).

i wasn't surprised, because the first dawn of war even today is still a great game, gameplay and graphics-wise compared to the current released games on the genre. this second game is way improved and more combat oriented, who doesn't want that? kudos relic/thq. but i can't believe the first world of warcraft still sells like pancakes on the 5th place, i thought everyone has already have one on their home, oh right, the next geneation of gamers perhaps are just starting. well, good luck lads.

Wow, congratulations to DoW 2. The game definitely deserves it and i'm horribly addicted at the moment (the short games only make this addiction worse). Really a very different RTS experience.

Honestly though, this list makes me sad as it shows just how much trouble PC gaming is in these days. Seriously, the Sims and WoW collectively hold EIGHT of the top ten spots. That's really a bad sign.

Worse still is that DoW 2 is number one, meaning that there ARE still a substantial number of hardcore PC gamers out there who WANT good PC exclusives, but just aren't getting them. It'll be interesting when March's top ten rolls out to see where Total War and the new Company of Heroes expansion end up, if anywhere at all.

LOL. Fear 2 disappeared from that list after only a couple of weeks of release. That's what happens when you whore yourself for consoles and dumb down your game. Looks like the hype for the third game is down the toilet too. And that folks is an effective way of destroying your own franchise.
