US PC Charts Feb. 15-21: Dawn of War II drops the Warhammer

THQ's RTS ousts Blizzard's Wrath of the Lich King as the period's top PC performer; F.E.A.R. 2 falls to seven.

For the week of February 15-February 21, Warhammer toppled World of Warcraft from the lead position on the NPD Group's weekly PC sales charts. Massively multiplayer online gaming fans need not worry about Blizzard Entertainment's continued dominance in the genre, though, because it was THQ's real-time strategy game Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II that scored the win over WOW: Wrath of the Lich King, not Mythic Entertainment's fantasy-themed MMOG.

Dawn of War II was the only new game to crack NPD's recap, with the remainder of the chart toppers mostly falling in line with the week before. EA's Sims 2 Double Deluxe and Sims 2 Deluxe outpaced Spore during the period, placing a respective third, fourth, and fifth. With Wrath of the Lich King in second, the WOW: Battle Chest--which contains both the original game and its first expansion, Burning Crusade--and WOW proper placed sixth and seventh, respectively.

The bottom of the week's top 10 saw the most substantive change, with Monolith and Warner Bros. Interactive's F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin falling from its debut in second position to seven. That game was followed by The Sims 2 Apartment Life, and Crytek's Crysis Warhead hung on to the 10th slot.

Week of February 8 – February 14, 2009*
1) Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II (PC)
2) World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (PC)
3) The Sims 2 Double Deluxe (PC)
4) The Sims 2 Deluxe (PC)
5) Spore (PC)
6) World of Warcraft: Battle Chest (PC)
7) World of Warcraft (PC)
8) F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin (PC)
9) The Sims 2 Apartment Life (PC)
10) Crysis Warhead (PC)

* The above chart reflects the NPD Group's sales data drawn from a cross-sampling of retailers nationwide. As such, it does not include game sales through nontraditional channels such as digital distribution.

I blame both console and piracy for fear 2, cause I love the game on PC..which I paid my good money for their good effort for. It`s a great game, but they seem to be bouncing against the cieling as to what to do next. I say end it with the next sequel, and think of something else.

All I can say is WoW!! I'm really glad that DoW 2 is selling well, because it really is an incredible game, but it is depressing how much people still like The Sims...

Crysis Warhead sells well. FEAR2 isn't as high as thought but at least it's in the top 10. To be honest, a consolized game like FEAR definitely doesn't deserve to be higher. The PC exclusive FEAR (when it was exclusive) was so incredible. It's a shame they went the way they did with FEAR2. I did buy it and I enjoy it but it's not as good as the first. Like someone said earlier, they'll blame piracy. It seems to be the scapegoat nowadays despite many other PC games selling multi million copies (Crysis included). It's too bad this doesn't include Steam or Direct2Drive or any of those.

FEAR 2 didn't even make the top 5 for an opening game. Monolith take note, never consolize and destroy your own franchise. You brought this on yourself. I'm sure they'll probably blame piracy when this game tanks on the pc. I'm glad Crysis is still in the top 10 for a game that several months old.

it's a pretty depressing chart. Crysis only 10th, and it's the cheapest game in the list. anyway the poll refers to retailers only, so I guess it doesn't include online-only shops.

This is actually very impressive, considering it does not take in account DoW's steam distribution sales.

Add the steam sales into this figure and it might actually hold the top spot for quite some time.
