US PC game charts: May 21-27

Oblivion retakes the sales throne, Heroes of Might & Magic V debuts in third, Rise of Nations slides to eighth.

Online may be the future of the role-playing game genre, but single-player adventuring isn't dead yet. A resurgent Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion relit the dragonfires of gamers' hearts and wallets this week, claiming the top spot on the NPD weekly PC sales charts. During the week of May 21 to 27, Oblivion dethroned last week's champ, the massively multiplayer success World of Warcraft, which slipped to the second spot.

While those two RPGs were duking it out for the top spot, a representative from a much less popular genre snuck in right behind them. Ubisoft's turn-based strategy game Heroes of Might & Magic V debuted on the chart in the third slot. While that helped push fellow turn-based strategy game Civilization IV off the charts completely, it did give the subgenre a higher spot than any real-time strategy game this week. Microsoft's real-time one-two punch of Age of Empires and Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends came in the eighth and tenth spots, respectively.

A trifecta of Electronic Arts' Sims titles held their ground on the charts, with the Sims 2 expansion packs Family Fun Stuff and Open for Business holding their respective spots at number four and number seven, while the original The Sims 2 moved up from sixth to fifth, swapping places with the NCsoft MMORPG Guild Wars Factions. EA also provided the only first-person shooter on the list, Battlefield 2, which took the ninth spot on the list.

I hope Rise of Nations won't slip too much... it's an awesome game.

WoW isn't a business model based on box sales. It's recurring monthly revenue from subscriptions. It took the previously imagined ceiling of MMORPG players and increased the count by over an order of magnitude.

It is amazing to see that WoW is still selling so well. It's old and already has 6 million members. How many more people can possibly play that game?

And what happened to Ghost Recon for PC?? Geez, that game is already off the charts.

The Sims 2 people enjoy building things. Personally, after a long day of being a nice guy, I like to inflict some misery in a game.

are you high on something? Oblivion gameplay isn't boring, it's great, but I'm past the hype.

    Now playing: HeroesV. That's cool.

Arg why are people buying TES? It was sooo boring! They nailed the graphics, the combat, the world... but forgot the gameplay! People don't buy it unless patch 1.2 fixes known issue: No actual gameplay included in original release

Wow, it's sad. College really ruined my PC Gaming habits. I do not have a single game on that list
Time to get back to gaming.

I think they should combine the numbers for ES4 and the collectors edition to give a true idea of how many they are selling
