Classic Railroad Tycoon now gratis

Sid Meier's original PC train simulation now available for free; 15MB download now at game's official site.

It's "all aboard" for PC gamers with a hankering for retro games. 2K Games has announced that Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon is now available for free download. The 1990 classic clocks in at 15MB and can be downloaded from the official Sid Meier's Railroads! Web site. Included in the file is the full game, the manual, and reference cards. The latest incarnation of the Railroad Tycoon series, Sid Meier's Railroads!, was released this past October.

Still one of the greatest games ever but why did they release it with two of the old bugs still there. If you play on today's PC's, the game speed is either real slow of hyper-fast. Also, a patch to the original made it so you could zoom in or out using the wheel on your mouse but not in this release. I've played this game for hundreds if not thousands of hours and it would still be at the top of my play list if they would just make it more playable.

The funny thing is that this game's already been abandonware for a long time to download for gratis at www.abandonia.com, which is IMHO one of the best abandonware PC-DOS game sites ever (Home of the Underdogs collects PC-DOS, PC, and some other games, so it's a bit different but the greatest one ever, I'm sure).

Abandonia.com DOES have both the original and deluxe versions of Railroad Tycoon! They've also got Transport Tycoon made by the man who later designed the Rollercoaster Tycoon games.
