Age of Booty begins next month

Little-known fact: Nestled quietly between the Age of Discovery and the Age of Enlightenment was, in fact, the Age of Booty. Today, Capcom said that gamers would be able to relive this glorious period beginning on October 15 on Xbox Live, with the PlayStation Network edition following a day later. PC gamers will be able to get their hands on Age of Booty through a variety of digital download hubs "shortly after its console kin."

Originally called Plunder, Age of Booty proved in July that even pirates can run afoul of the US Patent and Trademark Office. As detailed in GameSpot's most recent preview, the E-for-Everyone real-time strategy game presents players with the opportunity to affix a pirate's peg leg as they sail the seven seas on the lookout for treasure and adventure. The game will ship with 25 different maps, with Capcom promising an additional 20 to be available as free downloads in the weeks after release.

Designed by Max "Yeroen" Hoberman, former lead designer of Halo 2 and Halo 3's multiplayer modes, Age of Booty features online play for up to eight, as well as four-player split-screen action. Players will be able to compete initially in three different multiplayer modes, but as with the maps, Capcom plans to release several more through free, downloadable updates.

Age of Booty will plunder gamers' treasure troves for $10.
