No Man's Land E3 2003 Preshow Report

CDV's upcoming 3D real-time strategy game will span the history of the Americas from colonization to the Wild West.

CDV will be showing off a new 3D real-time strategy game, called No Man's Land, at E3 2003. Developed by Related Designs, No Man's Land is a historical game set in the Americas from the time of the first colonies in the 16th century on up to the Old West era of the 19th century. You'll utilize units ranging from musketeers to wooden warships as you develop the land and build your influence on the continent.

The game includes six different factions: the English, patriots, settlers, the Spanish, forest Indians, and prairie Indians. Each group has its own strengths and weaknesses, as well as some unique units to differentiate them from one another. No Man's Land includes three campaigns, broken up into 30 different missions. In one campaign, you'll take the role of a Spanish officer setting up a colony in America and defending it from attacks by the English and Native American forces. The two other campaigns put you in charge of the indigenous people uniting forces against the Europeans, and finally as the English settling on the East Coast and then moving out to the West. A random map generator will also ship with the game for both single-player and multiplayer action for up to eight players.

No Man's Land sets itself apart from other real-time strategy games with some unique features. One of these is the ability to research "counter upgrades." In most real-time strategy games, it is possible to research new technology that enhances the abilities of your own units. In No Man's Land, it's possible to research counter-upgrade technology that bestows a penalty upon your opponents. One of the more interesting counter-upgrades is the chastity belt, which slows down unit production for each of your enemies. Another unique feature is the presence of nonplayer-character bounty hunters, which borrows a page from Cyberlore's Majesty. You can choose to put a price on the head of your opponent's special and elite units. Depending on how high a bounty you put on the enemy units, the computer-controlled bounty hunters will harass and attack them with increasing ferocity.

No Man's Land is slated for release in the second half of 2003. We'll have more information on the game as it becomes available.
