GC '07: Officers PC Impressions

A new real-time strategy game from Russia was shown off at the Leipzig Games Convention. We caught up with Playlogic to get the lowdown.

LEIPZIG, Germany--The World War II strategy game market may well be slightly overloaded right now, but a new title from Russia will make its stake on the genre in Q1 2008. Officers takes place during the Second World War and puts you in the role of the US army as they take on the might of the Germans. We took a first look at the PC game with publisher Playlogic at this year's Leipzig Games Convention.

One of the big selling points for the game is set to be the 25km x 25km maps, which have resulted in rounds that can take hours to complete. There'll be no fog of war in the game, but your map will be restricted in terms of enemy intelligence, meaning that they could be just around the corner and you won't know it. You'll be able to command airborne units, jeeps, tanks, ambulances, and greyhounds, while on the German side you'll see tanks such as the Mach I, II, III, and IV.

The single-player game will feature seven large campaign levels that start in Normandy and lead you all the way into the heartland of Nazi Germany. The multiplayer portion of the game wasn't being shown in Leipzig, but we're promised online and LAN support for up to eight players. Obviously, the maps will be compressed quite considerably to prevent games from lasting forever, and in this mode you'll also be able to sample some of the German weapons and vehicles in action.

The game itself looks nice, with detailed damage models for the buildings and some neat shadow effects on background details such as trees and foliage. The full game promises famous historical cities that you can tear through on your missions, in addition to a change of seasons that moves from scorching summer to freezing snow. The troops themselves also display a good level of detail, although dropping them in vehicles will allow them to traverse the levels three times faster. The game is shaping up nicely and Playlogic should be able to show us more in the near future. With that in mind, we'll be able to bring you more details on the game soon.

    Woopty-doo. More americans. I wonder when RTS games will start showing the british and canadians and australians and french and russians and...

    to be frank there are a ton of WWII games out and this one will REALLY have to impress me in order for me to consider getting it.

    I've managed to download this game, and it's excellent.
    Maps are gigantic and completely open ended, with dozens of optional objectives (a.k.a, every single town or farm you liberate gives a unique bonus) action all over the place and generally smart AI. It's the sort of gameplay you'd get in Sudden Strike or Blitzkrieg, but with much better graphics, more tactics and strategies, and huge maps.

    This game is great, and looks good too.

    This game was already released years back. But not worldwide, oh-so-very-sadly. Gonna be really hard to get it. Gamespot should update it's files about this game.

    Klinsi the reason CoH is balanced and a sherman can stand toe to toe with a sherman is so you can actualy have a match based on skill instead of which army they used. It's the same in alot of other games. BF2 for example. The AK-74 in the game does the same amount of damage as the M-16. Why? So you can win a match on the OPFOR side and know it was because of skill and not superior caliber.

    Any way I give the best of wishes to any publisher who desides to produce a WW2 game. Just because it is over used as a backdrop for a game doesn't mean noone should try and that a WW2 game can't get GOTY. It depends on if we are going to get the same shiity WW2 games or a solid, revolutionary WW2 game.

    Hm... maybe not the lazyness of publisher maybe more precisely because the lazyness of game developer to make a truly superbly WW2 RTS game that allowed the player to waging a war in sea, land & air

    Why there are so few WW2 game that allowed player to wage a war in sea eh ???

    And to be correct, there are actually much more than just ONE WW2 RTS games released in recent years
    There are War Front TP, Theatre of War, Frontfield, Panzer Tale (Japan), Rush for Berlin Exp, Battle of Bulge, Battle of 1944, and others so its more than just ONE !

    Why this game are to always seen as BORING ?
    Maybe if u think its so funny to blow out again & again about Nazi eh?
    Especially if they got so many many handicapped that even happened in CoH hah ?

    Bah... so sorry cuz I don't like playing a WW2 game that had so many BS like since when a Sherman can stand toe a toe with Panther eh ???
    Since when a Sherman can stand toe a toe with Tiger eh ?

    Its so pathetic & its look like USA never had any good tanks that can stand toe a toe with Tiger or his any kind ?

    Even almost all WW2 game, in facts, TOO SCARED, yeah too scared too even give the German Me262 as their air power when USA only had P 41 Mustang (P 80 is underdeveloped) & British only had Meteor ??

    So what if in facts, German played by quality & we play by numerical ?

    So what ? even German does had superior aircraft but its just only in fighter while we absolutely had superiority bombers !

    And patheticly, all this game can do just repeated all the WW2 game features too, especially about ONE SIDE SINGLE PLAYER CAMPAIGN

    For God Sake, I think there are too many RTS WW2 games like that in store now so what the new & good point about this game ?

    They even think there will be any player want to play this game in MP using German ? hahahahaha... oh jeezzz....

    Bah... none will used the Germas cuz of course, when we play in MP especially ONLINE, we play FOR WIN or maybe for fun (but of course, we always want to win too eh ?!

    FOR WIN, we used the best units in game & the best unit in ALL WW2 GAMES ALWAYS THE USA OR ALLIED OR USSR SIDE !
    Plus we had played using the GOOD side in story so we had adapt their units into our strategy too compared to unknown never-used-in-SP German units

    Is they never thought about this super simple point in this game ???

    Even in CoH, there are TOO MANY player that playing & winning when using USA compared to German side !

    I hope there are better development about this game

There's only been one mainstream World War 2 RTS released in the last year, and that was Company of Heroes. The only reason World War 2 games are seen (wrongly) as boring is due to the laziness of publishers, and not on the source material.

    Whoa, I forgot, 7 percent of ALLIED casualties, not 7 percent of total casualties. Russia had 64 and China 24.

    Yeah, while I don't agree with your grammar, I absolutely agree with all you're points. I really want a game with serious Italian, Japanese, Hungarian, Romanian, Finnish, Bulgarian, Vichy French, Siamese, Croatian, Slovakian, Mengjiang, or various other Axis powers soldiers. Other than Hearts of Iron II, I mean. We do need something new and innovative, not more WOW U.S. VRS GERMANY YEAH again. It is important to remember that the U.S., Britain, France, and Poland between them only suffered 7 percent of the military casualties of the war, and only 2 percent were Americans.

    Wahahahahaha... I am feel pretty sad & so sorry for this super lame WW2 game cuz:

    1. Just another WW2 historic RTS game

    2. Just another game with US style in WW2 game & worse, almost all of WW2 game depict this kind of VERY SAME gameplay, story & acts about US in WW2 that make me sooooooooooooo...o BORING & sleepy plus puke

    3. Absolutely will had same lame US story in WW2 that had been told so many billionare times by other past & future WW2 games

    4. Just another same WW2 game with Theatre of War that use same gameplay without FoW & that games apparently isn't too successfull

    5. Will absolutely doesn't had cheat codes to ease the player frustation cuz the gameplay is awkward & broken

    6. The gameplay will absolutely be ruined by bad pathfinding & worse, without FoW, enemies can see us but we can't see the enemies despite there is no FoW ? WTF kind of gameplay is that ?

    7. Just another boring WW2 game with uncool & boring title

    8. Just another WW2 game that forced & depict player as US frutated commander in the battlefield cuz all of his subordination & his soldier had weak, broken, pathetic & bad AI

    9. Just another WW2 game that will have SUPER OBVIOUS STORY, ENDING that US will always win in the end & Germans will always lose !

    10. Just another WW2 lame game that apparently had feeling that driving Sherman is much more fun & cool than driving Panther or Tiger or Koenigtigers

    11. Just another WW2 game that pretend to be a realistic WW2 game despite in the end, player can always destroy 1 Tiger just using 1 Sherman in face to face close tank combat or using just 1 Bazzoka soldier can destroy many Tigers from the front !

    Aih.. why there are so many game developer that apparently so desperate to make another WW2 game that depict US or Allied or USSR side agaisnt one sole lone German, despite there are TOO MANY WW2 game like that in out there eh ?

    Worse, this kind of game NEVER can give any GOOD STORIES cuz the story will be super obvious, even we know the ending & consequency before playing the games so ?

    I think we start to need a WW2 game developer like Rockstar that can created a revolutionary, radical & controversial WW2 game
