Jagged Alliance to shred big screen

Strategy First partners with Union Entertainment to bring the mercenaries to the movies.

A "truly original" movie spin-off from a game is coming, according to publisher Strategy First. That would be a film version of the Jagged Alliance series--to be titled, originally, Jagged Alliance.

The project is a film version of the Jagged Alliance series, which will be produced by largely unknown Hollywood-based multimedia entertainment company Union Entertainment. The Jagged Alliance series tells the story of an elite group of mercenaries who undertake a variety of missions at the whim of the highest bidder. The film version will focus on such aspects as the cutthroat relationships between the characters, who must rely on but can never trust each other.

Union president Richard Leibowitz commented, "Jagged Alliance is high on character and action, but with a dark humor that fans relish. [It] has a solid premise, and its character-driven game story makes it much better suited to film adaptation than many other game properties. Those elements are key to successful game-to-film translations."

Strategy First has signed up Nick Nunziata, producer of upcoming New Line Cinema titles Meg and Grizzly Park, to work on the film.

The Jagged Alliance series started in 1994 as a turn-based strategy DOS game, and has so far spawned five sequels. There is currently a Jagged Alliance 3D game for the PC being developed by MiST Land South and was due for release in "early 2006." This project failed to materialise, but it is still "under development," according to the release. A Jagged Alliance 2 version for the DS has also been announced.

Wow...I still have JA 1 and 2. Still pretty entertaining when I feel like hauling out my old 486DX2 for a blast from the past. LOL

I'd be stoked for the movie, but of course this depends on who directs. People, can I get a JUST SAY NO TO UWE BOLL?

I like JA a lot, but a moive for a game that's unknown to most?

But....nobody's ever tried that before! So it has to work!

But seriously, JA is JA because it's a great turn based strategy game with RPG elements, I doubt they'll be able to translate that to a movie.

Now we need pc publishers looking at novels and independent movies that have great characters and stories and bringing them to life in the interactive gaming scene. Then we might see more decent games and less shallow, cookie cutter games we get now!

A Jagged Alliance movie can work. It's not a high concept sci-fi/fantasy geekfest. It's basicly an action/war movie with dark humor. I just wish they have a someone like Sam Raimi doing it. And a new game, still mostly like the original but with all the advancements expected of a modern game.
