Enemy Technology has today announced that it's working on a futuristic real-time strategy game entitled I of the Enemy. The game will see three alien races battling in a faraway galaxy and will feature around 25 single-player missions. In addition to the single-player campaign, I of the Enemy will feature skirmish support for up to eight players over the Internet or a LAN.

"The emphasis of the game has moved away from gathering, mining, and building and is concentrated more on interesting tactical problems, where the player has more of an opportunity to employ solutions that we designers might not have thought of," said lead programmer Mark Temple. "Reinforcements arrive according to an order-of-battle (which may not be reliable due to poor intelligence), via a temporal gate (the Alliance), or port facilities at which shuttles arrive from orbiting transporters. There has been an effort to keep the number of units on the board smaller than in other games of this type so that more emphasis may be placed on maneuver. This makes it more important for the player to achieve favorable matchups between friendly and enemy unit types, rather than just waiting for overwhelming numerical superiority. There is also an emphasis on alternative mission types where the goal is not simply the annihilation of the opposing side (for example, convoys, delaying actions, infiltration). There are others where annihilation is not possible, and victory is measured in terms of delay and inconvenience inflicted on the enemy. There are realistic facets of combat, including unreliable timing as to when reinforcements arrive, inaccurate descriptions of enemy capability (bad intelligence), and extensive use of indirect fire (artillery) to discourage fixed defenses and large formations."

Enemy Technology will publish I of the Enemy (itself) and currently plans to release the game simultaneously in all territories in the second quarter of 2004. We'll bring you more information on the game as soon as it becomes available.
