In development even before Homeworld's release last year, Homeworld: Cataclysm introduces significant engine and gameplay improvements over the original in addition to a whole new storyline. The single-player campaign takes place 15 years after your people had successfully reestablished a new empire. Over the course of 17 missions, you'll meet a new alien threat known as The Beast that will even turn your own ships against you.

But that doesn't mean that you won't have new means to fight off the enemy. Your mothership is now of modular construction, so you can add on new abilities that will make it far superior to the original Homeworld mothership. And contrary to the previous installment's static-feeling single-player game, you'll now be able to move your mothership around the map to more advantageous positions. Cataclysm also introduces dozens of new ships with new weapons and technology, including mimic ships, which can camouflage as a similar sized-object and multi-ion beam frigates.

Barking Dog Studios has incorporated the most clamored-for gameplay improvements - waypoints, fog of war, and time acceleration - into the game. Fog of war will mean that scouting, exploring, and paying attention to your ships' sensor ranges will add a whole new strategic facet to gameplay. Interface enhancements will also make it easier to monitor your units' status and to command your units from the long-range sensor screen. Unit speech is now individualized, with humorous character voices akin to those you'd find in a Blizzard game, so it's much easier to tell what units are calling in status reports.
