Madden rumbles into stores

Annual edition of EA's pigskin game now available on eight platforms; latest version hopes to topple Madden NFL 06's 6.5 million sold.

America's pastime may be baseball, but when it comes to game time, the country absolutely devours football. Electronic Arts' Madden NFL franchise, entering its 17th year with more than 51 million games sold worldwide, added its newest member of the family today when cash registers began ringing up copies of Madden NFL 07.

EA left no current platform behind, releasing the game on the Xbox 360, Xbox, PlayStation 2, GameCube, DS, PSP, PC, and Game Boy Advance. The game will also be available on the upcoming PlayStation 3 and Wii later this year.

New to 07 is the ability to control the lead blocker on running plays--after steering a lumbering lineman or fullback to open up a hole in the D-line, players then take control of the tailback and look for daylight. The Xbox 360 version, the second Madden title for the system, has been expanded to include the NFL Superstar mode, which sees gamers lead a created player through an NFL career.

While some gamers no doubt called in sick to work with the "Madden Flu," EA did its best to make the day a legitimate holiday. Declaring today "Maddenoliday," the publisher held an event in Madden, Mississipi, to celebrate the game's launch.

Another Madden-related event, the Madden Challenge, begins September 1 in Denver. This year, gamers will square off against each other in a national competition for the grand prize of $100,000. For more information, head over to the contest's official Web site.

Madden NFL 07 is rated E for Everyone and retails for $59.99 on the Xbox 360, $49.99 on the PS2 and Xbox, $39.99 on the GameCube, PSP, and PC, and $29.99 on the DS and GBA.

To find out of Madden NFL 07 is headed for the Hall of Fame or Pop Warner territory, watch GameSpot's live video review of the game today at 4 p.m. PT.

Ok, regardless of how much I miss 2K sports, I will admit this game deserves a 7.5 or so. It is a good game, but you have to wonder:

WHATS THE HELL WAS EA THINKING WHEN THEY MODELED THESE PLAYERS WITH THE WIERDEST LOOKING ARMS / ELBOWS IVE EVER SEEN!!

They all look like they are in a lot of pain. If you play the game youll know what I mean. Also disappointed with seeting a face guard on a helmet clip through a mans own shirt...should have atleast restricted fat peoples head movement to prevent it.

We all earned the right to complain the second EA bought the rights to the NFL, NCAA and Arena Football. Once they caused that monopoly of the football franchise, they opened themselves to comparison and scrutiny in regards to the 2K Sports series. I happen to think that the 2K sports series was superior in many ways, and EA knew that, so they protected their baby. Makes sense. Doesnt mean we arent allowed to miss our big brother 2K since our annoying little brother Madden strangled him in his sleep....

If you don't like it, SHUT THE **** UP, k? I am so sick of people constantly complaining that Madden is supposedly so bad and everything. How hard can it be to just ignore something and SHUT THE **** UP? Or do you not have something better to do so you can be on Gamespot all day whining about EA?"

If we shut up, we'll get the same crap again. The only way to make a different is to speak up. It's a free country. You don't like it, move!

Everyone is for the underdog until they make it to the top and they want to humble them again. Just play the game or not. Stop complaing and get on with your life. If your so great at everything, you design a better football game and shut the **** up. If you flunkies spent more time enjoying what a game has to offer than trying to nit pick it.....you might find that gaming is all about fun. All your energies focused on negativityu. No wonder you cannot get a girl.

oh yeah, i should've said CONTINUE to be an Arcade game, since last years you could cause 6-10 fumbles a game by controlling who was on the cover of the game(ray lewis). Thumbs down EA. If i wanted arcade id play blitz...

We arent going to shutup. because if we say nothing, the same cr@p will happen every year. EA will add some stupid feature and the game will still be an ARCADE game instead of a SIMULATION. And to put it into perspective, lets say you drive an Audi S8. However, ford went up and bought EVERY SINGLE car manufacture out there and now they only have the ford focus that gets 10(yes 10) miles per gallon in their new version. its the ONLY car available to buy new anymore. What are you going to do? Try and find a different car to buy and complain to all the poeple that buy the new one(making ford think its a great idea and not changing how they do business) or are you going to rush out and get your new and improved 10 miles per gallon for focus, that'll break down in under 5 years?

whoever is on the cover is way to strong. even if you coach your team to victory the previous years playoff teams(nfc champ game/ afc champ game) are always too strong and can take down the other team no matter what. The point is, football is about strategy not your players. yes the players make a difference, but the strategy against the other team is vital. That is why 2k games ALWAYS made a better football game. because if the bengals out played the giants, guess what, the giants lost. But if you were to play that in madden, no such luck. The series is flawed and its cash cow for em. They know they dont have to change much, so they dont. People are going to buy it either way.

If they are all the same then why don't just play Madden '95 still?
    They are not the same...
While it may only be a few small changes each year it seems, the game is constantly evolving, adding new features each time.

Words that come to mind, rehash, crap, garbage, lack of inovation. Can't stand EA. What is sad is that people actually spend $50-$60 to play the same game they already have.

lol @ sports games and the casual gamers that like buying the same junk year after year. EA must love you guys giving them all this money for little work

60 bucks for a slight upgrade ?? No thanks !!! Too bad EA has strong-armed any competition which leaves football fans with no choices. Segas NFL games were better anyway. If you buy the new Madden , you are reinforcing EA's stranglehold on the market and us gamers. BOYCOTT EA GAMES !!! >>>

Are you joking? Madden 07 is the game 06 SHOULD have been.
