Links 2001 Details

This year will bring one of the biggest technical improvements yet in the long-standing golf series.

Microsoft dropped off an alpha build of Links 2001, the latest iteration of the popular golf series. Links 2001 has the distinction of being the biggest upgrade to the series since the jump from Links: Challenge of Golf to Links 386. One of the new features included in this upgrade is a completely revamped interface that promises to let you fly through the options and jump into a game of golf in no time. All the players' animations have also been redone using brand new motion-capture technology that's smoother and also produces better ambient lighting on the player models.

As is consistent with the series, every detail on the actual courses is re-created in Links 2001. To maintain the photorealism of the Links series, the course layout is rendered in 3D, but all the periphery objects like trees, houses, and pro shops are drawn with 2D sprites. The game will include new players, notably Sergio Garcia and Arnold Palmer, who will come with their own distinct swing and reaction animations. Microsoft will ship Links 2001 with the same course architect program that the designers at Access used to design the game's courses, in hopes of creating a community of players who'll trade their customized courses online.

There's a lot in Links 2001 to talk about. We'll have a full preview of the game in the coming weeks. In the meantime, take a look at these 14 screenshots taken from the latest build.
