GC '07: Ubisoft opening game Windows

French publisher signs on with Microsoft's PC platform initiative; The Settlers, Train Simulator 2 now branded GFW; Sidewinder mouse unveiled.

Today at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany, Microsoft announced that the latest publisher to sign onboard its Games for Windows initiative would be France-based publisher Ubisoft. As with other Games for Windows partners, Ubisoft has agreed to ship a select number of its upcoming releases under Microsoft's certified standards, which include guaranteed compatibility with Windows XP and Vista, as well as support the Xbox 360 gamepad. Games for Windows-branded titles must also undergo quality assurance tests, as well as support Vista's parental controls settings and include other features designed to improve the overall PC gaming experience.

As hinted at in GameSpot's Q&A with the game's producer during this year's E3 Media and Business Summit, Ubisoft's first title to bear the Games for Windows moniker will be The Settlers: Rise of an Empire. Developed by Ubisoft's Germany studio Blue Byte, The Settlers is the sixth installment in the medieval city-building sim and is expected to ship to PCs this September. Like the majority of Games for Windows-branded offerings, it will not offer Live support or achievement points. The Settlers is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older.

Microsoft also noted today that its in-house-developed Train Simulator 2 will also carry the Games for Windows distinction. Once thought canceled, Microsoft apparently revived the project in January, stating that the new Train Simulator would feature the same tech powering Flight Simulator X. No other details on the project were revealed.

Lastly, Microsoft unveiled its latest gadget for PC enthusiasts. Dubbed a "customizable gaming system," Microsoft's Sidewinder mouse offers more than 5,000 customization options, with features that include an LCD that displays DPI and macro setups, weight modifications, and integrated quick-launch capabilities for Windows Vista. The Sidewinder retails for $79.95 and will be available this October.

ms finds out that their "next gen" console has com to its end of the line powerwise and since they just cant release a xbox 560 or xbox 1200 or xbox vista edition they r going with the oldest trick in the book :
pay better to play better. every 1 nos customizing ur pc with all sorts of new hardware will obviously make it stronger and since its upgradableand has ms's own operating system there is no point in releasing new consoles. they just lost out to sony and to becom the sore loser of this competition they force games onto pc with assurances to gamers like "sidewinder"(which by the way is the ugliest mouse i hav ever seen) xcept u just got 1 problem with ur theory ms . u outta hypnotize ppl to make them by sumtin thats ugly as that and costs 79.95 not to mention upgrading pc hard ware year after year with 1000s of bux to play upcoming games at higest setting.

That's the most ugliest mouse I've ever seen! I think I'll stick with my Laser wireless MX1000.

MS just get a good company like oh i dunno, Valve to do Cross-platform with TF2. I'm tired of only being able to play Shadowrun with my 360 buds.

Seems as if my Sidewinder collection (PPro joystick, gamepad, headset) is getting a new addition. I wish that the mouse would also be available in white.

My Intelli Mouse Optical USB (5 years old?) is ready to retire though it still works fabulous.

360 controller support! That's great! I actually have oblivion on my pc and would have rather played that with my xbox controller.

That mouse is insane. Its about time that there was a decent gaming mouse made. Razer has a few but after buying one of their defective products before, I won't give them any more of my money.

So basically, MS is going to force all games for the PC to be compatible with a 360 controller? Sounds like a pretty dumb idea. I can't imagine playing Galactic Civilizations or Counter-Strike without a mouse.
