Since the end of the 90's the space sim has died out almost completely. Which is a shame because it left behind some of the greatest games like this one. While the wing commander series was just a linear progression of missions that would change at certain points whether you were completing them or not, privateer was a truly open ended experience. You could go anywhere as soon as you saved enough (credits to buy a jump engine) and do anything. Being based on the wing commander universe there were a large assortment of weapons to upgrade and other goodies for your ship. Every base had a mission computer that generated about 4 missions but then you could join guilds and have access to higher paying more dangerous missions. The economic model was simplified with pirate bases paying high prices for weapons and food and then you could buy drugs or slaves and sneak them into regular planets. So while the graphics and sound quality are dated by today's standards the gameplay is what makes this game just as fun today as it was back in the 90's.
