FreeSpace 2 is one of the best space sims ever made and is a solid candidate for game of the year.
Its real-time strategy elements and its focus on cooperative piloting tactics are so central to its gameplay that Allegiance can be very challenging to learn, but it's well worth the effort.
You'll spend the majority of your time shooting throngs of enemy ships until you get so used to it you just want to stop playing.
