First Look: Destroyer Command
We've got screenshots of SSI's World War II naval simulator.
Destroyer Command is an attempt by SSI to create a niche market for yet another naval simulator. This game, like Silent Hunter, takes place in World War II, but the theater of operations is much larger, encompassing all the world's oceans. So in this game, you will traverse the Atlantic, Pacific, and all points in between.
SSI plans to make this game a detailed destroyer sim, but it will also emphasize the command aspect, letting you control the game from a CIC (commander in chief) overhead view. This CIC interface is important, because during the game, your command of a single destroyer will grow to control of a larger task force that can include up to eight vessels.
There will be detailed simulation of subsystems, as in Silent Hunter 2, but if you don't want to deal with the minutia of day-to-day operations, you can opt to let the computer handle those tasks and concentrate on controlling the ship as a whole from a 3D view. The other subsystems are otherwise 2D renders of instrument-heavy panels.
The game's graphics are impressive. In one night mission, the pitch-black waters were illuminated by muzzle flare, gunfire, and starlight flares and were punctuated by the geyser-like splashes of torpedo hits. Night missions will be a significant part of the campaign, but so will scout, escort, and anti-sub missions. As the destroyer was the bread and butter of every fleet, it saw lots of action and also bore the brunt of casualties. Therefore, SSI agrees you will need your wits about you to play this game to completion, and you will no doubt have to transfer your flag to different destroyers as they succumb to the barrage of capital-ship cannon fire, submarine attacks, and air bombardments.
Destroyer Command is being developed by Ultimation and is slated for a fourth quarter 2000 release.
