World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Hands-On - New Zones and Death Knights

We check out a plethora of new content in Blizzard's upcoming expansion pack for World of Warcraft

The last time we had a look at Blizzard's upcoming World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, was at last year's Blizzcon. The expansion will offer players a new land to roam (the frosty Northrend), an intimidating big bad (Arthas, the surly antihero prominently featured in Warcraft III's Frozen Throne expansion), and a dense mound of new content. We recently had the chance to go down to Blizzard's Southern California office and spend a meaty chunk of time rolling through several of the new zones in the game. In addition, Blizzard offered up details on the Death Knight class, a fundamental change to the raiding system, and some new quest types.

The mysterious Death Knight will be a gimme for anyone who has a character at level 55 or higher. If you have a 55 or higher character on any server, you'll get the option to create a Death Knight with any race. Obviously, there are some caveats: Players will only be able to create one Death Knight per realm per account. Once created, your undead rebel will be level 55, be able to summon a regular mount, and have a set series of quests designed to fill you in on how to use their unique abilities, as well as bring you up to speed on their backstories.

While we weren't able to play as the new class, we were treated to a brief demo showcasing the knight's finer aspects. The standout element of the knight is its rune-powered spell system. A series of six rune slots will rest beneath a Death Knight's life bar and hold any combination of the three rune types needed to cast spells or power their unique abilities: unholy, frost, and blood. The exact configuration of runes is customizable by players, although doing so will require you to go to a specific locale. We reckon this will work something like talents, in that you'll have to visit a trainer of some kind to let you respec your rune setup. It also seems like a player's rune configuration will vary based on the spell and ability types he or she favors.

Once used, a rune will have a cooldown time so your rune configuration can enable you to use or cast several of the same spells and abilities in quick succession if you set them up properly. While the specifics of the spells and abilities are still being sorted, we were shown a sampling to give us an idea of what to expect. We saw the death-coil spell, an area-of-effect disease, an ice-based shackle, and a wicked snare that yanked a spellcaster into striking range (which we imagine is going to be a really bad thing for casters). A complementary by-product of these rune powered abilities is "runic power," which will be generated every time you use one. You'll be able to store the power, such as a warrior's rage, and unleash a powerful ability that will depend on the amount of power you have stored. The only catch is that, like rage, it will bleed away over time. On top of all that, the knight will have three different "presences"--blood, frost, and unholy. Like a paladin's aura, these presences will offer a unique buff, but we didn't manage to find out what these would entail. During the presentation, Blizzard reps noted that the knight is designed to be a viable tank or magic user.

As if all the above wasn't enough to ruin Christmas, he gets a pet too. The knight can summon a ghoul from the corpse of friend or foe. To be fair, the ghoul will only last for a short period of time, but it looks like its brief life will be a serious problem for enemies of the knight. In addition to the standard pet commands that will let you toggle among aggressive, defensive, and passive states, the ghoul will be able to apply disease to enemies, as well as perform other assorted spells. Summoning a ghoul will also be an option while in battle. If you summon ghouls out of friendly targets who've recently died, they'll get an onscreen prompt for revival, not unlike a standard res. If they accept the res, they will return to the action and play as the ghoul for a short period of time with full access to their various abilities. The team is well aware that that this may seem a bit overpowered and that balance is going to be key to the Death Knight fitting in to the game. Thankfully, aside from death coil, the Death Knight won't really be able to do much healing, so all Death Knight groups will likely not work out.

The other big news is the way raiding will change in the Lich King. Due to the positive response to the heroic dungeon setting introduced in the Burning Crusade expansion, all five main dungeons in the Lich King will have a heroic setting. The potentially unsettling news for more hardcore players is that all of the Lich King dungeons will have 10- and 25-man versions to allow more players to see endgame content. While you'll find separate progressions for both raid types, they are not dependent on each other, so you'll be able to go between both. Another interesting perk is that you won't have to get keys or attunements in 10-man raids to participate in the 25-man raids. While this may sound like madness, we're told that there will be higher level rewards for the 25-man runs.

The last bit of info we'll discuss before we dive into the zones are the new quest types. We saw a demo of a rescue mission that segued into a unique twist on your typical escort. The demo followed a Draenei paladin who rescues a human from captivity. In order to escape, the former captive hops on a horse and heads off to safety. As he does, the Draenei actually mounted the same horse, sitting behind him, and went along for the ride. While the ride was obviously on rails, it was possible for the Draenei to perform a small selection of attacks on the enemies swarming to stop the escape. This feature is tied to the new vehicle mechanic for siege weapons that will also add action functionality when you're on certain flying mounts as well. Another mission we saw was a rescue that had you piloting an airship and dropping a rope down to aid non-player characters. Even more insane is the fact that it appears miniature dogfights may be possible with some of the flying vehicles, a move which could definitely mix things up.

Sounds good. Ready to play. The whiners are so funny. Everquest had similar situations and the graphics were outdated back then but I was one of the hundreds of thousands(at least) still playing after 10 expansions that just hadn't found anything better yet. I have now been on WoW for almost 3 years and haven't seen anything I would rather play.

    Meh...
Come on Blizzard just give us Starcraft 2

Do not waste your time by milking this OLD overhyped Mmorpg cow...

Where the hell is Starcraft 2 ??????????

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    To Pyrage :

I have played WoW and i WAS NOT really excited with it.
What makes you think that we all bash it without having tried it ???

Just because you were easily addicted by that blizzard "pay fee"-Overhyped Mmo garbage with cartoon graphics... does not mean that everyone has the same disease like you

And by the way WoW is an old game now
Blizzard is just milking the same old cow to get more money
    This expansion is a waste

    Time for something new

They need to drop WoW and start on a new game... its been what? Four years now and NOTHING in WoW has really changed. Same unbalanced PvP. Same horrible graphics. Same instances.

Oh, and Pyrage. Blizzard makes great games. But they are the WORST company for everything else. It took them years before their servers were stable and their customer support is among the worst I've ever seen for any company.

Im tired of some guys saying " WoW sux.AoC,Warhammer pwnzzzz" and dont even try the games yet. u ppl see the videos and start to say crap, play the games, then comment.Videos is one thing.Gameplay is other.

Most of the ppl that is saying " i will cancel my wow subscription" will step back and play wow again.
WoW how is now have some bad points, yea, but Blizzard is one of the best game companys,im sure they will innovate and make wow better and better.

I'm not trying to bash Conan or Warhammer,i will try both games when they come out.If they are really better then wow, then i will play and forget warcraft. I'm just trying to say for the ppl play the games before say something.

I had four decent 70s and a few bankers with over 10K of gold. But after playing it for 3 years I found Blizz has abandoned the PVE players for good, even in a PVE server. GMs are slow to respond to your help(and they can't do a thing anyway). I kept raising issues to Blizz but they have fallen to deaf ears. So, after trying to get Blizz fix their problem sfor the past 6 months, I gave up. There is no hope with Blizz. I deleted all the characters and past my gears and gold to my guildmates. So long, blizz! You are successful in one things, making your loyal fans quit(I'm one of the first buyers of WoW when it came out), one after another. They think if I have so many 70s and gold I will be hooked to them 4ever! think again! If I want PVP, there are other games I can play!! I bought WoW because I enjoy more of the story telling part of PVE.

@DeadlyOnez ... I can pick up a decent pair of leggings in five minutes... If you're looking to be impressive, then DUH you're going to spend some time doing so, or else everyone could, and it would be wothless. Also, I think rep grinding is a true notation of the amount of work you put into the game. You can farm for hours without fruition, but you will always get a steady reward for rep grinding. Second, if there are SO MANY PEOPLE trying to get into raids, wouldn't there then be enough partial raids because of all these people that a high percent would get in? Second, a Death Knight would start at 55. Unless you're really dissatisfied with your class, I think quite a few people would hit 80 first... Also, why would everyone be a Death Knight? I mean, sure, it's a cool new class, but Blood Elves were a cool new race, and there wasn't an insane amount of them, and there were definitely still people playing other races. Also... I don't understand how access to TONS of new weapons, armor, items, and increased skill level, not to mention an entire new profession, would cause a recession. If anything, it would lower the price of older armor, with access to the newer stuff... My main criticism is Blizzards removal of attunement from modern instances. I really think having a chain of dungeons brings more value into completing the final one.

If wow would minimize the grind rep and maximize they weap drop rate this would work alot better. BLIZZARD LOOK... MORE THEN 3/4 OF FORUMS ARE NEGATIVE! DO SOMETHING!!! IT TOOK ME 5 MONTHS TO GET A LEGGING 5 F-ING MONTHS... I quit

Here is how it going to look like the first weeks of WOTLK..

Dark Knights everywhere (your lucky if you see any other class)

People arguing for loot! Actually they will be fighting if they can even have a spot in the raid. 25 man raid means 25 people will be fighting over say maybe 3 spots. Raids will be dispersing often. The economy will be in recession with the high prices of DK gear and mat!. I hope Bliz is taking all this into consideration because all they do is put one class over the others example TOP: warlock, mage Bottom: Warrior, Pally

World of scripting/easymode/yawn/grindcraft is releasing another grind fest. Time to move on and play something refreshing, interesting, ground breaking and mature. Oh look. AoC is out on May 20th. Thanks Funcom for not being another Blizzard grind fest of absolute boredom and repeditive gameplay!

    Blizzard Suck

I quit after 3 years coz I got bored with it (sick of supporting 4 night a week raiding) spent most of my time farming to keep toon up). I asked for my money back they told me that they dont give refunds even as I quit only 3 days after I renewed my membership.

    Blizzard are a disgrace imo.

I mean who wants to grind another 10 levels to get to 80 then do more of the same 25 man raids to get endgame content that you have to rerun over and over in the hope to get loot.

Blizzard need to re-evaluate there customer care policy and they need to re-evaluate WoW if they are going to survive.

    Roll on Warhammer

The problem with World of Warcraft is that it just isn't fun. Sure, it's fun to an extent, but this game is just so damn repetitive, and addicting without satisfaction, and it would take an entire makeover to change this fact, not an expansion pack.

If any of the coming MMOs are actually fun, then Blizz will have a tough time on their hands.

Graphics do not make the game, its the gameplay. I enjoyed the gameplay of WOW but it got boring after a while and now feels all the same. AoC has great graphics sure, But that is their flaw the graphics are soo good they require a very high end machine to run the game good, And it totally screws over pvp. Cant have large scale pvp without the game running like complete crap. Thats why they made AoC siege battles Instanced with a cap of 48vs48. WHICH is **** Retarded, point of keep sieges is too have the freedom of Open world pvp. Like DAOC did, and What WAR promisess.
