The Witcher enchants 1 million

CD Projekt Red's grim action RPG based on Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy universe hits sales milestone, console edition hinted.

Prior to the release of CD Projekt Red's action role-playing game The Witcher last year, few outside of Eastern Europe were probably familiar with Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski's brand of dark fantasy. Be that as it may, the fantasy universe has met a receptive audience in the PC gaming crowd. Publisher CD Projekt Red said today that The Witcher and its recently released Enhanced Edition have sold a combined 1 million copies worldwide.

"Scientific research has proven that those sales numbers are quite good for a debut game based on a relatively unfamiliar IP from an unknown studio on a 'dead' platform," CD Projekt Red said in a statement, presumably with tongue firmly planted in cheek.

The Witcher tells the story of Geralt, who belongs to a unique caste of humans that wield supernatural powers with which to slay monsters. In the game, players encounter a moralistic story layered with shades of gray, in which the do-gooders often have more than a few skeletons in their closets and the ne'er-do-wells invariably have lots of skeletons, everywhere. The Enhanced Edition works to improve the first, with CD Projekt Red promising faster loading times, new NPC models, and a revamped inventory system, among other tweaks.

Along with today's sales milestone announcement, CD Projekt Red also hinted at future developments for The Witcher universe, as well as a possible console installment. "There are a lot more places to explore in the world of The Witcher and there's obviously a huge audience out there that would still love to see the game on console...we're PC developers first and foremost, but you never know!"

I started The Witcher and thought it a mature and deep Fable - really interesting and different, and much more engaging than the usual fantasy cliches of most RPGs. Unfortunately I gave up PC gaming and didn't get very far as Geralt, but would love to see this on my 360. It would more than make up for the underwhelming disappointment that is Fable II, anyway.

I bought the Enhanced Edition yesterday and this game beats the crap outta Elders Scrolls IV Game of the Year Edition on my PS3. Leagues better.

I'm glad to hear that PC Games are still hitting great numbers. It's truly great for the whole industry. And It's a great thing for CD Projket too, considering they're a small time developer.

With games from large mainstream established companies continually disappointing me, I was so pleasantly surprised with this game. It is the best RPG I have played in years, if not ever.

From now on, I think I will focus more on buying games from lesser known studio and independent designers.

I loved the game... both times I played it. But, the load times on the enhanced edition is still very long. It takes over one and a half minutes to show the load screen after hitting the load button. My machine is very fast with almost everything, but this loading thing is a pain in the butt. Still, fingers crossed for a second game!!

Hopefully paying attention to a console version doesn't cause them to lose focus on the PC games they make.

Only played the enhanced edition so can't comment on the quality of the original. Either way have had a ton of fun with it and feel its extremely well crafted. those who complain just don't enjoy good old fashioned rpg's that require you to do research in the game and read the manual. granted i never read the manual just the walkthrough but i still figured it our just fine.

Good to see the game doing well, I still think it has major menu/control mapping flaws that make it a pain to play.. not found of the generic Crpg combat either...but its still an ok game..... Y yes I am a game nazi
