Atari Steams it up

Publisher announces it is to start piping titles through Valve's digital-distribution service.

Many industry heavyweights have made at least part of their catalogues available on Steam, including 2K Games, Activision, Eidos, id Software, Majesco, Rockstar, Sega, and THQ. Now, one more has joined their ranks.

Atari today announced that North American gamers will soon be able to log on to Steam and download the following titles: Act of War: Direct Action, Act of War: High Treason, ArmA: Combat Operations, Atari 80 Classics in 1, Death to Spies, Desperados 2: Cooper's Revenge, Indigo Prophecy, RollerCoaster Tycoon 3: Platinum, and Tycoon City: New York.

Atari's Steam lineup won't end there, with The Witcher, Neverwinter Nights 2, and its expansion pack, Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer, being made available to Steam users in the next few weeks. Nizzi Renaud, Atari's vice president of Online Entertainment said, "We look forward to making an extensive collection of games, across many genres, available to Steam's extensive, globally connected community."

While the publisher says its games are available now, Steam's site indicates otherwise with no sight of the aforementioned titles. Meanwhile, Sega's Football Manager 2008 (known as Worldwide Soccer Manager 2008 in the states) made its Steam debut on March 11.

Atari UK has yet to confirm if the catalogue will be made available outside the US and Canada.

Yup, Atari is full of sh*t; still no NWN2 on Steam. Of course it's not surprising, considering the appalling support they offered for the game's myriad technical failings.

Errrh. I dont dislike steam the same as my HATERED for windows LIVE, A.K.A Con Program. just i think steam games should not require the net to play.
Im stuck at boarding school so the net filter block steam so i cant install and play thier games. im guessing quite a few people at home would have the same problem, mainly children with protect parents.
The problem has often made me avoid buying steam altogether.

Might be some smart, yet simple decision making by Phil Harrison, might not be. Regardless, they need to get some better games on the service. Sure, they have Indigo Prophecy, which was a great game. And soon they'll have The Witcher, Neverwinter Nights 2, and NN2: Mask of the Betrayer. But still, not really a great catalog. Hopefully more titles come up with the inevitable US release.

Suggestions: Alone in the Dark, Dungeons & Dragons Online, Marc Ecko's Getting Up, Neverwinter Nights, Test Drive, Unreal Tournament, The Witcher, Driver, and RollerCoaster Tycoon.

The Witcher is the best RPG I've ever played (despite the ludicrous sex scenes). Neverwinter Knights - more specifically Atari and SecuRom intentionally placed a null entry onto my system compromising my machine to exploits, and acting like a root kit. You couldn't even find it (invisible folders) let alone get rid of it without 3rd party software.. Last I heard, they hadn't patched it out. A shame - it ruined a good game for me and a lot of other people.

Steam is actually a half decent service, because it allows you to download a game at your own pace without an installation. It works wonders for those playing at work or school.

I don't mind losing physical ownership of the game because I know it's embedded in my account. If you say, move houses and lose game-disks, you are screwed

Don't Like the lack of physical ownership associated with downloading from Steam

Stage 1: Put Atari's best recent games on Steam
    Stage 2: ????
    Stage 3: Profit

Steam is the home of PC Gaming, long may it continue.
