One thing newbs will need to understand ...
- Sep 30, 2009 4:15 pm PTIt's for people who WANT to work on this game, yes you'll be "playing" but you'll really be filling out surveys and finding glitches.
Read this article (from a great TOR blog) before you even sign up for the closed beta. http://darthhater.com/2009/09/29/know-what-your-getting-into/

It will be like playing any other mmo and using the bug report function.
99.9% of people who go for beta are after a free first-look. That's the primary reason.
Helping find bugs is secondary motivation.
Everyone knows that, but won't say it out loud.
I'm not knocking the topic, just sayin'.- Please wait. Quick reply will be available shortly.

[/QUOTE] Even if bugs were found there is always the chance that they won't be fixed. That's oneof the disapointing things about testing, find something and they don't care, don't have time, etc to get it fixed by launch.

Oh, I'm sorry Leogus-Katarn, we had no idea how much you know about what the Bioware Devs are thinking. You know, considering they're one of the most respected game company out there today.- Please wait. Quick reply will be available shortly.

Although, I will admit, that your psychic (perhaps force) powers which allowed you to read my mind over the computer to give yourself all of the knowledge that I have about Bioware, betas, and beta testers is most impressive.
What I posted is what beta testers say all the time about the games that they work on, a lot of bugs might get fixed but there is always some little ones that will not, especially not in an MMO. Just because Bioware is a respected company doesn't mean that they never have problems with their games, I seem to remember quite a few graphic glitches in Mass Effect. Certain problems will take priority over others and when it comes time to launch the game they might not have fixed every single little issue that their game has, and there is no problem with that.

- I was responding to JamieK1981, I mistook the guy that responded to you for him, so I had the wrong person quoted. Jamie had said "I would be honoured to find some bugs and hopefully get them fixed, i have seen alot of bugs in a game that never, EVER get fixed and i always wanted to be the one that helped get them fixed." Going by what a lot of beta/game testers (ones that work for the company) say that is one of the problems about getting into a job like theirs. I've read multiple stories that were written to people that wanted a job like theirs, thinking that they would just have fun and be paid to play games all day. The employees listed different reasons why people should think twice about the job, including, having to play through the same parts of levels over and over and over, sometimes having to play bad games, having to play really buggy games, writing detailed reports about each bug found, and that when the game is finally released not everything that they report can be fixed in time, and some developers don't really care. If developers aren't always even to fix problems listed by their own employees they are likely not going to be able to fix every little thing that beta testers report.

Anyone who didn't boycott Gamespot for the rest of their lives after the Jeff Gerstmann/Kane and Lynch fiasco is quite obviously mentally ********.

Yes... I was talking to you despite the fact that I had quoted someone else. Sounds perfectly logical.

- Oct 1, 2009 8:11 pm PTthe anti gamespot thing comes from when gamefaqs was merged with gamespot, and the gs people started to build up a reputation as disruptive posters, trolls, little kids etc. Not to say gamefaqs is really any better, just thats what it was about back then.
Anyways, i'd be willing to bet when bugs are reported they kind of get categorized by priority, bugs that are really game breaking obviously get higher priority than something either very minor or something very hard to duplicate.

This is true. Game-breaking bugs and anything exploitable would of course float to the top of the list pretty fast. Other things in a beta are server stress tests, watching for graphical glitches (like falling through the map, walking through walls, etc), checking powers and their functionality, proofing the storyline (if there is one) and any number of other things that don't quite fall into the "bug" category.
What it boils down to is that beta testing a game isn't for fun (90% of the time). It's work. And while it can be great to be involved in a beta (and very fun at times), don't let that fact get in the way of getting the job done. The developers rely in large part on outside beta testers to work out the kinks and find issues they haven't seen yet.

- Oct 2, 2009 4:56 am PTYeah. What everyone else has said about beta testing. I beta tested (well, during the open beta, which was really just a paid first look, to be honest) Champions Online, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of miserable. Nothing worked right.

- Oct 2, 2009 5:40 am PTIt's true. They will prioritize fixing bugs that are game breaking and/or balance wrecking. Even the best mmos are guilty of this. (eg. Vanish bug in WoW existed since beta and is only being fixed 5 years later)
