Gas Powered Games initiates Space Siege

Developer partners with Sega to attack the final frontier in spiritual successor to action RPG series Dungeon Siege.

The action role-playing game genre is almost interchangeable with the phrase "dungeon crawler," having exploded in the wake of Blizzard's successful Diablo series. Now the creators of one of the more notable post-Diablo dungeon crawlers are looking to bring the genre into the far-flung future.

Sega today announced that it will be publishing Gas Powered Games' spiritual successor to the Dungeon Siege franchise. Scheduled for release on the PC early next year, Space Siege casts the player as a cybernetics engineer on a massive ship carrying some of the last survivors of the human race.

Throughout the game, players will have the opportunity to install cybernetic upgrades that will convey bonuses, but at the cost of the engineer's own humanity. This will factor into both the storyline and the gameplay, as an unenhanced human will have to emphasize strategies different from those of a cybernetically augmented character. Space Siege will also support multiplayer action with a four-player co-op mode that has a separate mission structure from the single-player campaign.

Originally appearing on the PC in 2002, Space Siege predecessor Dungeon Siege spawned an expansion pack, a sequel (which had its own expansion), a PlayStation Portable spin-off, and even an Uwe Boll movie starring Ray Liotta (Goodfellas, Operation Dumbo Drop) and Jason Statham (Crank, Snatch).

Space Siege is currently set for release in the first quarter of 2008 in North America and Europe.

Well, I haven't much cared for the PC renditions of the Dungeon Siege franchise, but they've been making steady forward progress in game design as Dungeon Siege II was significantly better than the extremely dull original, and Throne of Agony on the PSP may not be anything exceptional but it's polished and addictive. So an SF themed hack-n-slasher? Sign me up.

Gas Powered Games knows how to make a game. I am sure they won't screw this up.

What!? Did you try the medium or hard difficulty options? The hard difficulty is truly hard (pun not intended) to crack.

    "...cybernetics engineer..."

    Wow! That's truly interesting!

Plus the kind of strategies that could be utilised by reading the next paragraph seems truly interesting! Mate, this title is one for me to watch!

This is what is needed. More genre's within the same or new gameplay. For PC games to re-emerge we need a wider range of games, this could be the first sign that developers/publishers are beginning to understand this.

Now all we need are a Wild West Oblivion type game and a modern day detective story using the Half Life engine, for example!

Dungeon Siege was a good game, Dungeon Siege II was kinda pathetic, now we have Space Siege? I hope I'm wrong but the age of hack-n-slash (Diablo style) seems to be over. I think gamers have evolved and expect a little more than point, click, and forget. They tried fixing that in DSII but it still lacks depth.. I hope this turns out to be a great game but I feel they are taking a step in the wrong direction.

Dungeon Siege was a cute game but it wasn't a challenge nor did it have any real RPG elements. Still Uwe Boll shouldn't mess with this game, i just hope he never touches the Fallout Franchise ......... hope he doesn't read this ..
