Mutant Chronicles heading online

The upcoming postapocalyptic role-playing game from Paradox Entertainment goes massively multiplayer.

Paradox Entertainment has announced that it will publish a massively multiplayer online version of Mutant Chronicles Online, its upcoming role-playing game, in spring 2003. The game is a joint venture with Dubai-based game studio Imaginations, which has been developing the project.

Mutant Chronicles Online is based on the original pen-and-paper Mutant Chronicles role-playing game. Players will choose from 40 different customizable characters and a wide variety of weapons and armor. The game was previously known as Mutant Chronicles: Warzone, and it was originally intended to be a tactical action game. An online multiplayer version of the game, Warzone Online, was also in the works, but it has now been placed on hold due to "some major open issues," according to Paradox.

"It is our belief that online games are still best suited in a role-playing environment," said Theodore Bergquist, CEO of Paradox Entertainment. "With Imaginations we found a dedicated group who knew the [Mutant Chronicles] universe and have great skill in online gaming architecture."

Mutant Chronicles Online will launch with one complete city, and other areas will be added to the gameworld through expansion packs and upgrades. We'll post more information about the game as it becomes available.
