E3 2008: Jumpgate Evolution Impressions

Jumpgate Evolution is a new intergalactic MMORPG from NetDevil, and we had a chance to check it out with publisher Codemasters.

Developed by NetDevil and published by Codemasters, Jumpgate Evolution is an ambitious new massively multiplayer online game set in space. Influenced by the classic Elite, the game will cast you as an intergalactic trader, visiting space stations to sell goods and services. You can choose an allegiance between one of three factions, and once you start to make money, you'll be able to buy new ships as well as upgrade your old ones. There'll also be a dash of combat, but as you travel through the jumpgates suggested by the title, your primary concern will be business and trading. To find out more, we met up with Codemasters to see the game in action.

Interview

Just before E3, we caught up with Codemasters Online about what you can expect from Jumpgate Evolution.

You'll start out in the universe by choosing which faction you want to ally with. The Solrain are mafia-like and prefer backhand dealings that avoid conflict when possible. The Quantar faction are more free-thinking, with a strong belief systems and an interest in organically produced goods. The final faction are the Octavians, who are much more aggressive and militaristic in their outlook. Depending on your allegiance, you'll get access to different ships and missions, and people will react to you differently as you travel the galaxy. And though you'll start the game with a lowly light shuttle, you'll be able to upgrade to fighters, transporters, and haulers as you accumulate more funds.

When you jump into the game itself, a feed ticker informs you of what's needed around the gameworld. This lets cunning traders make more money by delivering much-needed resources, as well as keeping tabs on what's happening overall in the universe. Missions will be randomly generated depending on your location and abilities, and you'll be able to engage in player-versus-player battles in certain areas of the map. The three factions all control different areas of the gameworld, so you'll need to ingratiate yourself with different people to progress. There will be other nonplayable factions that you can run missions for, and sometimes they'll have questionable ethics. For example, one faction will hire you to take water supplies to a certain outpost, but you'll then find that it has contaminated and killed the entire colony. Eventually the story will reveal the politics and power struggles at work, and it will be up to you to decide who you want to work for.

Although you won't level up in the traditional sense of an MMOG, you will earn combat and exploration licenses that will help you progress through the game. There are also some cool community-oriented features, such as the Flash-based interface that modders will be able to tweak and adapt. Jumpgate is artistically impressive, with plenty of visual touches, for example how the Quantar faction have adapted their ships to piggyback on asteroids.

There's no official release date for Jumpgate Evolution as yet, but a beta signup is now active on the official Web site. There isn't any news on pricing or subscription either, but Codemasters claims that it should follow "traditional" MMORPG pricing models. We'll bring you more on the game once we've had a chance to play the beta.

Haha u guys remember when u had to fly a strike craft with torpedos! That lock-on took forever. and u just had to sit there, but it was still exiting

Obviously the RPG guys couldn't care less about the game. Good for you take your WOW. I for one actually like combat that requires twitch skills. This game will more appeal to the FPS kinda of guys, especially those of us who grew up on Wing Commander/Privateer.

I don't understand why everyone say this is an EVE copy. Have you guys actually played EVE? Does it seem like an action-based space MMO to you???

EVE and JGE are completely different. JGE's combat system is not related EVE in any respect other than that they both take place in space. JGE has twitch based targetting, etc. EVE is click, orbit, hit modules, forget (for the most part). It's a numbers game! JGE will be more along the lines of a space fighter game.

The development team on this game are the most determined and generous people I have ever come across in a game. Where else can you chat directly with the development team?
Judging by the original Jumpgate and the major improvements they have made, this will be a superb MMO.

"...There'll also be a dash of combat, but as you travel through the jumpgates suggested by the title, your primary concern will be business and trading..."

Well...... this is definitely not what I thought it was.
If you're one looking for a more combat oriented game play and less of the "diplomatic" bent I would suggest Air Rivals (www.airrivals.net).

Hmmm EVE is a over botted space game, I know one player who runs no less then 10 bots non stop. I tried EVE many times just never got the hang of it...EARTH AND BEYOND was a AWESOME space mmorpg to bad EA which sucks donkey slong killed it

Maybe this will be the next big game, Stargate worlds is out there also Seems stab and casters cant get away from them types of games that are so over done that nothing is new anymore. But space sci fi mmorpgs have barely been touched. WOWS HEROS and DEATHKNIGHTS lol been there done it a few times in other games move on blizzard....

Jumpgate is a BAD joke compared to Eve...

Only difference is you control your ship in real time instead of clicks (big deal.... >.>)

Oh, and the other difference is that eve is like.... 1000 times more complex than Jumpgate...

You can trade in eve 2, and you actually trade stuff that other players BUY to use on their ships...

In jumpgate u only buy generic random **** and sell to stations to make money, BOOOORING...., oh, and PVP is basically inexistent in Jumpgate...

I was in the Jump Gate classic beta and played for a long time, and it was a RARE mmo where SKILL has a place and I apreciated that alot.

EVE is a discusting point and clic game and most mmo's are, except rare games like Jump Gate.

So don't dismiss it so easily. it has very good game play and it only needs decent regular content added to make it realy fun to play.

The Classic is not going to get this content but hopefully they will not
let me down in the new one...

All I can say is at least when you play a game like Jump Gate you are actualy DOING stuff, instead of telling your caracter/ship what to do.

For me it's like driving a car in a racing game versus telling a car to get
from point A to point B and wait for it to do so...

And make no mistake there has always been loads of exploration
and combat (npc vs player AND player vs player) in Jump Gate so my guess is this one will not be lacking in action either.

I wonder if they'll fix the docking difficulty most players had with the original Jumpgate. Nothing worse than blowing up every time you try to dock to a station.

Uh... Sounds like Eve Online, only it's more centered around (potentially boring) trade. Just gimme a MMO-RPG based in the Homeworld universe please.
