BioWare picks up Perpetual tech for MMOG

Austin branch of Neverwinter Nights developer licenses platform from Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising creators.

Last year, BioWare revealed that it was working on a massively multiplayer online role-playing game at its new Austin studio. Last month, it was reported that the company had a 2009 release date in mind for the project. Today, the company announced some of the technology it will use to support the game: Perpetual Entertainment's online technology platform.

The Perpetual Entertainment Platform offers support and service for online games. These services include game feature extension, load-balancing, lobby servicing, and patching. As per today's agreement, BioWare intends to use Perpetual's technology for online game operations, infrastructure development, community support, and more.

Perpetual's online technology platform is the third middleware solution BioWare has turned to for its as-yet-unnamed MMOG. Last August, the Edmonton, Alberta-based developer announced it had licensed Simutronics' HeroEngine for use in its as-yet-unnamed MMOG. According to a Perpetual representative, "Perpetual Entertainment Platform complements HeroEngine in providing services and capabilities that extend and enhance players' experience online." HeroEngine will also be featured in Simutronics' own MMOG, Hero's Journey, slated to be released later this year.

In June, BioWare's technical director Bill Dalton revealed the upcoming MMOG would employ enterprise software from StreamBase Systems. The software will be used to identify cheaters, prevent code hacks, and keep track of the game's customer base, as well as provide "complex event processing" to sustain massive game-wide events involving thousands of players.

The new MMOG is just a WoW knockoff for Lucas Studios.

I'm thinking its going to be either Mass Effect or KOTOR online. Either way, I want more information! Let us know what you are working on Bioware! (I hope its KOTOR!) Here's the deal though, Bioware has the big fanbase similiar to Blizzard. I really think they have a chance of being one of the bigger MMOs. I just hope they vie for the sandbox style gameplay.

I've never played KOTOR. What's the big hype about it? I bet people are crazy about it because it's open ended. I'm not a big fan of sand box games.

Yeah Rontor, KotOR would be great

Could also be a Mass Effect game. I believe they are thinking of a trilogy, and if the IP is successful, they may try a MMOG in the series? Just a possible guess though......

Please be Knights of the Old Republic Online!!!! If it is Bioware, you shall sell millions of copies. KOTOR Online would potentially blow World of Warcraft out of the water.

I happen to like World of Warcraft. To say it stinks is merely your opinion. Just like my opinion of Jade Empire isn't particularly high. If this new MMOG isn't of the KotOR saga, I hope that they still release the 3rd installment of the series sometime soon. I'm very interested in finding out what happened to Revan.

This game is just going to be amazing, I mean sure it's another MMO, but the thing is it's made by Bioware... So it will most likely be incredible.. And be a WoW killer even.

Wow another mmo, we need lots more of those. What bioware should start is the third installment of the KOTOR series and not worry about these other games. Obisidon is not going to pick it up anytime soon.

Hmm. Very interesting. Sounds like they are hitting this one hard. They don't want to cut any corners. I'm looking forward to hearing more about this secret project.

Bioware must have a plan to exand pretty soon, because Mass Effect is a confirmed trilogy and with them taking on more projects, I only expansion as an option now.

I like it. Bioware is getting back to their roots, which is on PC. I'm really looking forward to Dragon Age, and I hope they find a publisher soon enough.
