Guild Wars enlists 6 million

NCsoft and ArenaNet's online RPG franchise surpasses new milestone nearly four years after original installment's launch.

Earlier this week, NCsoft added its roster of online games to Valve's digital distribution platform Steam, providing gamers with yet one more way to easily access its products. However, even without Steam's help, NCsoft is having no problems shifting units in one of its most popular franchises, Guild Wars.

Today, the South Korean game company announced that the Guild Wars franchise has officially surpassed the 6-million-unit sales milestone. The marker comes some 14 months after NCsoft said that sales for the franchise had exceeded 5 million units.

The Guild Wars franchise milestone comes nearly four years to the day after NCsoft released the ArenaNet-developed not-quite-massively-multiplayer online role-playing original Guild Wars to a decidedly positive critical reception. In the intervening years, NCsoft has churned out three new campaigns--Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall--as well as the expansion pack Eye of the North.

NCsoft and ArenaNet remain at work on Guild Wars' fully fledged sequel, Guild Wars 2. However, the publisher has yet to attach a release window to the online game.

Im sick of waiting for GW 2, it gets delayed every year. in 2007 they said that it would be released summer 2008, in 2008 it got summer 2009, and now, in 2009, its delayed to 2010/2011. I do want GW2 to be good, but my patience is starting to run out. GW2 better be 1 hell of an awesome game if they need so much time for it.
    Though I still can't wait...

    @ Evil-Assassinz
Guild Wars 2 won't be coming any time soon so I recommend you to buy at least Guild Wars: Factions even only for the "single player". You can buy all 4 games for the price of one and on Steam I think they will be even cheaper...

don't forget Warlord_Irochi its also free. i can see it's population grow during this recession just because it doesn't have a subcription cost.

also i haven't played this since it first came out, bought the expansions but never played them. maybe i should pop in to see whats new (probably a lot!)

I read a recent interview with the founder of Arenanet. He said that GW2 would have less skills than GW. 2001-2003 working on the concept for GW. 2003-2006 development and 2006 released. He also said that many companies worked on their games for 2-3 years before they announced them but Arenanet announced GW2 early on.

Something that Blizzard said "We usually release a game 3 or 3 and a half years afer we announce it."

It's sad but Guild Wars 2 isn't coming any time soon. Best bet is late 2010.

6 million copies doesn't mean that many people play. When they asked him for actual numbers he dodged the question like ninja-arrow.

The person in the gameplay video has a terrible build. No energy management.

Guild Wars is successful because it is a great game and it has no monthly fee. If you thought Guild Wars was good, just wait until Guild Wars 2 hits the shelves. Arenanet is a quality game developer.

So people still plays this?. While so many MMORPG aer going down month after month?

That´s the reward for adding new content from time to time to your game. Congratulations NCsoft

and seriously, people who compare Guild Wars to WoW really havent played Guild Wars. They arent' comparable games. They have two completely seperate focuses, goals, etc. And to say that for a game that is 4 years old to take 14 months to sell 1 million copies is bad, that just means you don't pay attention to video games at all.

lol we heard about GW 2 in 2007, its 2009 and they still have no pics, gameplay, or release dates. If there was an actual release then I buy the expansions and come back to Guild Wars instead of just waiting.

Its good to hear, used to play a ton of this at college. Been a lot less now that I'm graduated and have crappy internet lol. Its a great game esp with a great guild. The formula that is successful with Guild Wars is the story based missions which don't feel like grinding as in WoW.
