Guild Wars gets sequel, expansion

Sequel to ArenaNet's online role-playing game will have persistent worlds, won't have subscription fee; Guild Wars Eye of the North due out this summer.

Guild Wars fans have a lot to look forward to over the next few years, as ArenaNet today announced two more products in the PC role-playing series.

The developer has confirmed that it is currently making a full sequel to Guild Wars, and expects the game to go into beta "sometime in the second half of 2008." Unlike its predecessor, Guild Wars 2 will have a persistent world. Like its predecessor, the online game will not require a subscription to play.

Gamers who want to start prepping for Guild Wars 2 will be able to in Guild Wars Eye of the North, the first "true expansion" for the series set for release this summer. Eye of the North will require one of the previously released campaigns--Nightfall, Factions, or Prophecies--and will log players' accomplishments, which unlock exclusive items and bonuses in Guild Wars 2.

The expansion is set in the dungeons and underground regions of Tyria, the backdrop of Guild Wars Prophecies. Eye of the North adds 150 new skills, dozens of new armor sets, 10 new heroes, and several new items.

No rating or pricing information was announced for either product. For more on the Guild Wars franchise, read GameSpot's review of the original Guild Wars.

To start this whole rant off, the Guild Wars series is pretty just amazing. No disrespect for World of Warcraft players, but when you are able to have a higher level cap ( not finalized yet ), pretty much an unlimited amount of items, weapons, armor, etc., four different playable races, and no monthly fee of $15 USD then the game pretty much has to beat World of Warcraft. The locations are stunning in these games and same goes for the graphics. However, there are some minor glitches but majority of today's games have those so there is nothing to worry about.

I too agree with lllscrewyoubig when it comes to the level caps. It would be nice if they slowly raised the level cap per expansion or mini-expansions. Therefore the message will be sent to gamers that if they want to get stronger, better skills, armor, weapons, etc. then they have to buy an expansion that adds on about +10 levels or so to the level cap. This will also allow the developers and AreaNet to make money and stimulate a profit because of the increase buying of their games due to the fact that the players want to get better - supply and demand.

Overall, I am eager for this game and I can not wait. This would definitely be an upgrade for the series.

its looks prettyu good for now i mean like full world is interactive which is good (as soon as they dont lag like other unsuccesful MMOs) and there is a rumor there will be no cap which keeps ppl from playing bec lots of ppl play for the social aspect of MMOs where u want to reach the lvl no one reached or get the gear no one got so it may be good experience and new races brings some new features for the old subscribers
and i agree with lllscrewyoubig but only maybe they should make the faction gainin so easy at begining and get harder later on just like exp or maybe they should give some balth. action reward in quests to also encourage ppl to do quests cause now in GW most ppl just skip the quests and do the main missions cause they rewards r peice of crap except for the skills

Meh, I think they should gradually increase the level cap by, saw 5 with each expansion until it gets to like 40, cuz 20 is a bit low. Also, some of the early skills are definately not as good as the later ones, and I'm not talking about norm versus elite. They should balance it out, because then players who've just started cana ctually win in PVP if they have skill, because right now the skills are unbalanced so you need to get a bit into the game (saw up to south shiverpeaks in prophecies) to get good skills to use i PVP. Plus that balthazar points to buy skills & weapon upgrades means more experienced players get even more stuff so its harder for beginners to get started

I notice a number of people wish to get rid of the level 20 cap. However, the whole point of GW was playing for skills not playing for levels as you do in most MMOs. Although I do feel that the level 20 cap is a little low, I also think it is a good thing because the game is about skills not about trying to advance to the highest level to "look" good.

I've played the original Guild wars...and it was amazing to start off with (having not played any MMOs before - except Runescape...which doesn't count xP) but as I got to level 20....twice and bought factions the euphoria started to wear off....I got bored and after playing for less than a year moved on...I will most likely end up buying Eye of the north to see how ArenaNet are doing with making GW better. If it is better than the original I will most likely also buy GW2 especially because it is said to be a rival to his WoW-ness (not my own opinion I have no idea...please don't complain that this is my opinion because it's not. I don't know enough about the game yet). I would, however, like it to have a better range of armour...with ratings similar to WoW (e.g. good, rare, epic etc.) and more weapons as each game brings new ons but not enough and people find themselves competing with too many people to sell the same weapon and prices seem to drop dramatically every now and then.

As much as I'd like to anticipate this game (GWs2 that is) as much as I do for Spore or Fable 2, I just don't see it happening. It's got alot to fix to sway my opinion. However, should it fix those things, and should it have modest minimum specs, I just may become a convert (I currently have 2 lvl 70s in WoW, and 4 lvl 50s in CoH/CoV)

I don't like GW's concept of non-persistent world but if GW 2 something free like WoW then i might make the switch.

I lvoe guildwars and I'll be buying Eye of the North aswell. But my PC won't be able to play GW2 and I don't feel like updating anymore, that's why I got my 360. 360 has enough games to keep me busy but GW2 is a direct sequel to one of mt favorite games so hopefully this will also be released on 360 (and PS3).

ok, persistent world. My friend told me it's going to have jumping, swimming, huge pvp battles, and world events with dragons and stuff. 100+ lvl cap, or no cap. and on top of all that, it wont have a fee. This, my friends, may be what finally topples WoW.
