CES 07: Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising Updated Impressions

Perpetual Entertainment shows off squad combat for the first time in this upcoming massively multiplayer role-playing game set in ancient Rome.

LAS VEGAS--If you've ever wanted to do as the Romans did, then you might want to look into Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising, the upcoming massively multiplayer role-playing game that will let you explore an ancient Rome full of mythological creatures. The game, which is being developed by Perpetual Entertainment, features some of the most believable combat yet seen in a massively multiplayer role-playing game. Not only that, but you'll be able to lead your own squads into battle, something that Perpetual gave us a glimpse of at the Consumer Electronics Show.

In Gods & Heroes, you can adventure alone or you can hire mercenaries and other characters to accompany you. If you have a squad with you and wish to engage in a solo battle, all you have to do is give your squad a passive order, and they'll stand by and let you saunter into combat alone. That's not to say that they won't assist you, however. Any of your spellcasters, for instance, will support you from a distance by casting buff spells that boost your fighting abilities, as well as healing you when you take a lot of damage.

Should you want to take the squad into the fight, you have a number of options. The squad control panel can let you issue basic commands to a squad as a whole, or you can give orders to your fighters, your skirmishers, and your spellcasters. The fighters are the front-line melee troops, the skirmishers are ranged warriors armed with spears or bows, and the spellcasters are your magic users. The artificial intelligence is designed so that if you get in a big brawl, your troops will automatically pair off against an opponent, so you can see a lot of pitched one-on-one fights going on. That's also helpful for the game's detailed combat animations, which really make battles feel like real fights rather than the abstract swinging of swords seen in most massively multiplayer role-playing games. Blows connect, warriors reel from being hit, and you'll see elaborate finishing moves, such as one warrior leaping onto the back of another and choking him.

The squad system means that you can get the feeling of being involved in a decent battle, even if you're playing by yourself. Team up with a couple of other players, each with his or her own squad, and you can take on large groups. Squads will also be useful as you tackle some of the formidable mythological creatures in the game, such as hydras, medusas, and centaurs. And it's a truly impressive sight to see a squad engage a towering colossus. For those situations, you may want to call in the favor of your character's patron god--an example of this being a lightning strike to take out a colossus. Favor is earned by doing quests for you gods, and that's the only way to replenish it, so you'll want to hold those god powers for special situations. Gods & Heroes features a distinctive setting and colorful visuals, and it could very well be a game for those tired of elves and dwarves. The game is currently a few months from beta testing, and it should launch later this year.

This game has caught my attention. Think of the interesting mechanics you can put into the MMO with this set up. You can go alone or with a group, hello if you do it end game wow style, then you would have 40 players and the players players with them. That could be a battle with like 200 freakin peps. Sounds neat.

Great idea and it looks good, but looks are only half the part.

Hope they can pull it off though, I would hate to see something like this turn out badly due to forced publishing. *cough* SoE *cough*

Multiplayer games are the future of gaming...the first time i tried one i like it very much since play with other humans is a lot more fun than play with a stupid machine. Humans are unpredictable so you can always find someone saying stupid things or act strange and make something new, make you laugh and have fun.

There's so many MMOs because they work. People want options when playing games. Imagine having only Mario and no other game like it...that would be lame. Regardless, people will eventually get tired of the MMO they are currently playing and will want to play something different with new content, new stories, new everything. Hence Gods & Heroes. I myself played the hell out of WoW. I saw all, did all, earned most of it, and burned myself out to ash. Gods & Heroes is looking like a sweet fresh start for me, and most likely thousands upon thousands of others. I can't wait to play it!

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY FREAKING MMOS?????? Seriously, game designers, take a hint from Guild Wars. With this many MMO's coming out, you're going to need something more than an interesting setting to compete with giants like WoW & with the dozens of other MMO's. Listing just a few, LotR online, Vangaurd, EQ 2, FF XI, Age of Conan, City of Heroes, Wow, Guild Wars... etc. You get the picture.

Game Industry: USE YOUR ****ING IMAGINATION!!!!!!!!!!

Whichever MMO comes out first will do the best if its any good. Any other MMO's won't have enough people to play them when they come out after that. Plus, the first to come out will have time to fix bugs before the others. Kind of like the 360 and the PS3

The mmo market is getting cluttered, but more of them are slowly trying to break out of the mold. Warhammer will improve on WoW, while WoW updates to stay innovative. LoTR is very EQ but has die hard fans to support it. Vanguard is EQ 3 with unreal features that gives it incredible depth, but the graphics are nothing earthshattering, even though nice (better have a good pc though!). Conan has single player up to 20, a value on it's own worth it, and many innvotions for combat, siege, etc. Slowly these guys are trying but alas, more of them coming into the market means more of them will be scraping to survive. More players are entering the market too, which is good, but enough to populate all these games? We shall see, as the Devs also try to cater to a more widespread audience (ie casual gamers, women, etc)
