EverQuest celebrates birthday with $20 megapack

Anniversary Edition of long-running MMO includes all EverQuest expansions for only $20; collection will be released April 23.

Twenty dollars may not buy much these days, but for fans of massively multiplayer online role-playing games, it'll soon buy them an entire world.

Sony Online Entertainment today announced that it is celebrating the eight-year anniversary of its flagship MMO EverQuest by releasing the EverQuest The Anniversary Edition collection on April 23. The pack will include EverQuest and its many expansions for $19.99.

SOE will also be releasing new in-game content beginning today. Among the planned additions are a scavenger hunt and "dozens of Luclin Fabled NPCs."

EverQuest II, with new graphics and features, was released in late 2004.

EverQuest, which was released eight years today, is rated T for Teen. For more information, read GameSpot's review.

Monks FD pulling, Warriors Tagging, Enchanters mezzing, these are the things I miss in todays MMO's. I hate the newer dumb down combat systems in todays MMO's

Ahh Everquest. I heard so much about ye. Yet the slow loading between zones on my old Pentium 3 was more than a nuissance. Perhaps now it would be a good time to visit ye. Alas there is far too much content for me to swallow. It would take me a decade to traverse the massive world ye is. No thank you may ye have a good funeral. LOL jk. I don't think Everquest will ever die out in the near future. It has a hard core fan base. I quit after trying it for two weeks. Just not my type of game.

I have to disagree with Diernes, while I enjoyed EQ immensely (gave it a good 3 years), WoW isn't just a minor improvement on EQ. The game only borrows a few ideas from EQ, such as instances (LDoN), but he core gameplay mechanics are much more inspired by Diablo 2, although more complicated. Leveling in the game is easy, running dungeons on the other hand requires teamwork and coordination, especially in BC. Oh, but I do agree, way too late to get in on EQ since there are virtually no low level toons anymore on most servers. The deal is nice for people who need a cheap way to catch up on some expansions.

Double-click monster to death. Wait for respawn. Repeat. >>> The idea behind every mmog.

Everquest is a classic. But its far to late to start playing now you would be insane to attempt it. As to the WOW advocates. That game is just a everquest clone dumbed down for the blizzard fanboi's. WOW did nothing better than EQ just ripped off all its idea's and placed it in a package accessable to morons. An Easy and boring yawnfest, and one of the most overated games of all time.

I've never really cared for MMOs, it sounds like a good deal though I'm not sure how many people would go back and play an 8 year old MMO for very long.

EverQuest was such a great game back in the day, had loads of fun playing it. Although, I don't see why anyone would start playing it now... it's kind of late.

WoW didn't do it better they just simplified it for the masses and dumbed it down so anybody could play

I have to agree EQ was the one that put MMO's on the map. WoW just did them better. But 20 for all the xpansions is a great deal.

Everquest was a revolutionary MMO when it came out, but in this day and age, it fails in comparison to WoW or Guild Wars ( i dont like guild wars that much anyway). most ideas for wow came from Everquest, but wow did them better..

I tire of MMORPG's. Make something innovating for once!

Interesting, but surely this would effect the subscribers of Everquest 2? Would'nt it be better to merge the two as the gameplay is very similar. There also rumours that SOE, will be providing the PS3 with some MMO's, I'm just waiting for the anouncement of Everquest being on PS3
