Arad going on EverQuest

Former Marvel Studios chief signed on to produce big-screen adaptation of seminal MMOG; 300 scribe Michael Gordon also attached.

In February, Sony Pictures Entertainment vice chairman Yair Landau obliquely mentioned to GameSpot that along with a Metal Gear Solid silver-screen adaptation in production under the guidance of famed game designer Hideo Kojima, the studio was "working with one of my favorite producers right now on an idea for an EverQuest movie." Unwilling to finger the mystery producer, Landau said, "I'll let him disclose that."

The announcement didn't play out exactly as Landau anticipated, but GameSpot has confirmed today that former Marvel Studios chief Avi Arad would be producing the long-speculated EverQuest film. Arad, who resigned his positions as CEO and chairman at Marvel last year to form his own production company, is most recently responsible for the big-screen adaptation of Bratz: The Movie.

Joining Arad on the project, which first blipped onto the radar during EQ's heyday in 2000, will be 300 scribe Michael Gordon. The Sony Pictures rep was unwilling to comment on plot details or when the theatrical release would take flight.

Despite being a massively multiplayer online game often defined by its users, EverQuest boasts a substantial tome of lore surrounding the world of Norrath and its outlying, otherworldly planes. Now in its eighth year, the original EQ has received 13 expansion packs, with its 14th, EverQuest: Secrets of Faydwer, due in November. The game also spawned a semi-sequel, EverQuest 2, in 2004.

This is an awesome idea! I don't know how well this movie will turn out but the lore behind Everquest is extremely deep and interesting. I was just waiting for a movie to be in the works. Yeah Everquest is old but it was an incredible game back then and it still is today. Yeah games like WoW have now surpassed it but there would be no WoW if there weren't an Everquest. Even though there were games like Meridian 59 and Ultima before it. EQ is what really took off the MMORPG genre. The lore behind EQ is amazing but as far as this movie goes ill have to see some more previews before i get too high of hopes.

While I know I won't like Bratz, everytime I hear ARAD I hear X-MEN, SPIDER-MAN. Ok, Daredevil was not that good (although I heard it was better on DVD with all the cut scenes) and neither was Mutant X on TV (but some critics actually like Punisher and Hulk). Just think like this, the guy who brought us X-Men and Spider-Man, will make this movie.

I cant imagine this being made by the Bratz creator .... that game is one of the worst movies ever made on Rottentomatoes ratin system ...!

Arad is a genius though. He has done wonders for Marvel. I think that he only produced the Bratz movie, but i could be wrong.

He left Marvel to make Bratz?!!

    Oh, the irony.

Gamespot quote: Arad, who resigned his positions as CEO and chairman at Marvel last year to form his own production company, is most recently responsible for the big-screen adaptation of Bratz: The Movie. Doesn't the wording of that seem like "yeah...the guy that brought you Bratz is bringing you EQ?"

I'm just hoping that the world of Norrath doesn't get a bunch of bling and cell phones!

I agree with redfox66: this will be a disaster. But, even knowing that, there is an invisible, unyielding force pulling me to that theater seat. It is very weak yet, but it is there. Oh...it IS there. God help me.

EQ1 has just enough players to keep it running.

Lol a Semi-sequel is right, they need to make EQ3, and make it freaking like EQ 1 was but better, not lameness.

Would someone mind explaining to me how in the heck they were able to make that many expansions? I can't help but think that they'd run out of stereotypical fantasy ideas at this point.

Hey Alacard, you do know Arad's responsible for every movie and TV shows that has even 0.00001% to do with Marvel, right? Spider-man? X-men? Heard of those?

Translation of script: people in chaos, overcome chaos, the end. Definitely not worth waiting for, or even looking forward to.

Everquest will try to drain you dry with expansions, it's nuts.

They could do much much worse than Arad and Gordon. A definite plus. Still... game movie.... sigh.

EQ still has an active userbase between 250,000 and 500,0000. Not too bad considering the age of the game. I will give it that it's got a more interesting story-line and history than any other MMORPG, but I'm not real sure how well it will lend itself a movie.
