Buried Sea expands EverQuest

Sony Online Entertainment reveals new expansion for long-running MMORPG; The Buried Sea flows in February 13.

While recent talk of expansions for massively multiplayer online role-playing games has been dominated by World of Warcraft's Burning Crusade, it wasn't the only MMORPG expansion news to hit over the past week.

One of the games that paved the way for WOW and all MMORPGs, Sony Online Entertainment's EverQuest, is getting its 13th expansion. EverQuest: The Buried Sea will be available for digital download on February 13 for $29.99.

The expansion will see citizens of Norrath battle armies of undead and save an ancient city from being swallowed up by The Buried Sea. Additions to the game include ship-to-ship combat, 60 new missions, the ability to use Energeian power sources to enchant items, the creation of fellowships, and the ability to create customized guild banners that serve as teleporting beacons.

The original EverQuest was launched in March 1999 and earned GameSpot's Game of the Year award for that year. For more information on EverQuest: The Buried Sea, head over to the official Web site.

EverQuest was the first PC game I have ever played (coming from the Amiga in 1997-1999). I'm glad it is still very much alive especially with the new Progression Server - very tempting to try. I still go back to it because it's what I grew up with, and still I haven't seen any MMO that has been comparable. Sure, there is WoW but it is more targeted towards casual gamers and not the hardcore gamers who prefer a serious yet darker world. There will always be more room for EverQuest and suprisingly those who left EQ for WoW are coming back, and I've seen several folks from EQ2 head back to EQ. I can tell why: this game's content still shocks them as they did me 9 years ago.

I gave up on Everquest over a year ago and haven't looked back. I played for 6 years and it became too monotonous. Couldn't explore any new areas without a group or guild raid. I don't have 6+ hours to play a game anymore and that's what you need if you're going to accomplish anything past level 60 in EQ. Also, the EBayers really ruined it IMHO. Too bad because I really enjoyed the game for a long time. I play GW on and off now and it's OK but not as in depth as EQ. Never went to WOW becasue it looked like it would require huge chunks of time to play, similar to EQ. Anyone playing D&D or any other MMO's that don't require sacrificing a social life to enjoy? I'd really like to find another MMO I can enjoy.

People tend to hate EQ now because it`s a HARD game. Guess it`s too much work for the little people who rather play WoW and lvl to 60 in less than a week.

People are thinking the game must be bad because it's old. I mean, what's the logic on that? People are still playing Quake1, and that's like 11 years old game. Aging doesn't necessarily hurts games, it usually just makes them better. And why should they close the servers if there is still nice amount of players for this game, don't hate the game because it's old(school?)

EQ is a *much* better game these days - the developers have done a remarkable job at keeping it up to date. Most of the older content is pretty much like it always was, but since the previous expansion (The Serpent's Spine) ypu can play all the way from level one in the new areas, with WoW-type quests for advancement. Its just a HUGE game world at this point, and has probably the most mature, friendly, and intelligent players of any MMORPG.

Wow, that's a long running MMORPG. Is this what WoW will be like in 5 years?

    Wow...I forgot this game exists.

Seriously, why would you play EQ when WoW and GW are so much better?

as a looong time player of EQ i can say its not 'deep' its just confusing as all hell. and whats worse its impossable to play without a large organized guild past level 60 or so. atleast if you want too actualy see any of the high end content. you cant 'explore' a high end zone since you WILL get crushed in about 5 seconds, and alot of it is triggered content anyhow. still id be playing of not for Sony runing the show. they have been all over the map on what they were trying to do and just as you get used to one 'path' of advancment they change it all around too something else. and with every other expantion the take it in a 'new direction' and just add further too the confusion. and since they shovel out an expantion every 20 minuts, it gets old quick.

no reason to shut the game down, but id avoid it for new players unless your ready to spend more time doing home work to get ready to play than actualy playing the game.

i wonder if any one still plays this. if there is, is it big enough to warrant an expansion?

EQ is worse than WoW and Guild Wars, so who cares?

EQ is still around because at its core its an awesome game. Ive played on and off since its release, there were times when i wanted a change and i tryed new games, but i always seem to come back to EQ. I left and played WoW for about 8 months, its a fun game but does not compare AT ALL to EQ with regards to depth, content, and challenge. Other games may look a little prettier, much it doesnt detract from the game. My only problem is the expansions are released too quickly, and i dont have enough time to play in the old content before more is released. Another thing about EQ to be loved are the players who are generally more mature and intelligent. (You kind of have to be in order to progress.) As compared with WoW where the average age is probably around 14, in mentality at least.

Missions huh? I remember the quest system in EQ being so ridiculously difficult to understand it was almost un usable. I activate a quest, you had to type the specific phrase that would trigger the text from the NPC, you would have to take notes yourself, and then research online exactly what to do. It was beyond awful. So I'm kind of interested to see what "missions" are. Though I'm wondering if my lvl 44 monk and 39 druid are still around after all these years.

It hasn't died because it's still a good game with a decent ammount of players for its age. It's actually a technical marvel when you thinkg about it. The game itself is old enough that by now it probably SHOULD have died, but it manages to add and innovate which is more than I can say for a lot of other MMOs.

When I see a story like this I ask myself "why, why hasn't that game died yet"

Alaris83 - It`s because all MMO have never measured up to EQ. Perhaps graphically yes, but never in gameplay, storyline, and MATURE players.

Why would SOE let EQ die? WoW may have 8 million + players but EQ2 has a solid core and SOE wouldn't leave them hanging.By MMOs standards EQ2 is still doing well and there is ZERO reason to "let it die".

I don't see WoW and EQ as the same kinda thing,WoW feels more easy where as Eq2 feels more immersive that has citys that are alive and changing & also your own homes.

I enjoyed EQ 1 & 2,the only thing that kept me from going back was SOE and not the game itself.

I think once SOE has put out the content (They said they already did a year ago & instead shipped us an EXP without the EXP) then I',m gonna renew my station pass if they still have that.

    SWG...oddly....I really liked ^_^
