E3 '07: Dungeon Runners Impressions

We take a look at this free-to-download, free-to-play MMORPG from NCSoft.

Given the huge growth in massively multiplayer online role playing games, it's easy to forget that there's still a good portion of gamers yet to enter the genre. It's these players that NCSoft is aiming to attract with its latest venture, a game that could probably be called the first casual MMORPG. Free to download and free to play, the game requires only a $5-per-month outlay if you want its premium features. We took a look at the game at E3 to see if there could be such a thing as a "free" MMORPG.

The structure to Dungeon Runners should still be familiar to MMORPG players, but it's generally much easier to do things in comparison. For example, it's much easier to level up your character at the beginning of the game. There are 100 levels to work through, but the idea is that you should be leveling up every 15 minutes or so. NCSoft also has an interesting approach to characters, in that you can change between classes midgame for a small gold fee. This, they say, allows players to experiment and find their ideal character without facing a penalty to do so.

It's clear to see that the entire game is geared toward making the experience as welcoming as possible. Your health and mana regenerates automatically, so if you're taking a pummeling, you really just need to run away to survive. If you are killed, then you respawn close to an obelisk that will take you back to where you were in minutes. As well as making it a little bit easier for novices to get into, it also makes Dungeon Runners a game that you can play alongside another MMORPG. NCSoft said that you might want to run a "main" online game in one window, and then minimize it to do a miniquest in Dungeon Runners when you have some downtime.

Of course, the developers wouldn't be able to finance a totally free game unless it was funded either by in-game advertising or some sort of revenue stream. While you can complete the main quest and make it to the top, 100th level without spending a penny, upgrading to the $5-a-month package does bring a few benefits. First of all, you can stack your potions, meaning that you can heal yourself even more easily in battle. Secondly, you gain access to banks in towns where you can leave your items and free up your inventory. Thirdly, in a feature that was added recently, you can use voice chat between fellow premium members. Finally, if there ever is a queue to join a server, premium members jump up ahead of those playing for free.

So far, 100,000 people have downloaded the game and logged online to play it. Whether you're on a free or paid account, you have access to the monthly upgrades that NCSoft makes to the game which add new features and generally iron out performance issues. It's clear that Dungeon Runner's intentions are quite modest, and it may be a low-fat alternative to a proper experience such as World of Warcraft, but there's certainly some sense behind the "free to play" idea. With free access to the game, a potential market of millions will eventually decide if the game is a success or not, and if it does well it could pave the way for many similar pricing structures. Dungeon Runners is available to download now.

People who have yet to get into the MMORPG part of gaming will find this as a brilliant starting point.

This game does not take itself seriously. Neither should you. It's fun, very tongue-in-cheek, and a remarkably enjoyable pastime for those with a sense of humor. I've played it since February, off and on. Casual, definitely casual play, comic relief. Don't bother with this game if you don't like to laugh. Dungeon Runners is a parody and the developers have done an excellent job.

@chappystix21: "...I have Vista, and getting this to run on it was a nightmare. It doesn't support vista..."

I've installed, and ran this game on 11 different Vista machines with very few problems (nothing to do with Vista actually). I did have an issue with SLI, but that was in both Vista & XP. As far as installing and running on Vista: all I've had to do is install the game, and run it. Nothing more... Just like installing and running on XP. Runs great on Radeon's & Geforce cards alike in my testing.

Could this sound less interesting? Visually poor with no imagination, I bet they all had images of a cash register in their heads when they thought of it. Not much out of 10!!

I have Vista, and getting this to run on it was a nightmare. It doesn't support vista. Also, the headache of getting registered for the games account and the forums (which I needed to, to find help on getting the game to play and stop crashing) was another strike against it. But once I got past that hurdle, I have to say, the gameplay is addictive and lighthearted. The graphics are colorful and welcoming. I like being able to play this game casually and not think I'm wasting money if I don't feel like playing today or tomorrow.

That said, once you start getting higher level items, and running out of storage space (constant trips back to town to sell your loot gets annoying but are made easier by teleport scrolls) you are going to really feel the burn in wallet and are going to want to plop down that 5 bux and become a member and get that storage bank and stackable potions/scrolls and finally equip that Rainbow item you have just been dying to try out. Recommended!

Dont CALL this game free... Its like u play diablo2 and when you do your MF runs and have nice unique drops or even yellow u cant wear them... And u have to stack with blues and greys (baaad quality) unless you pay 5$per month so you can wear good items....
When in a game the only thing you do is running instances/dungeons all the time in order to find good loot but you can only wear the **** ones if you dont pay , wheres the fun on that??? So is that free to play ?
Free to play , pay to enjoy it = NOT FREE..... the end

Doesn't look and sound good to me. I've seen better dungeon crawlers than this one, and I already play two different MMO's to tie up my playing time.

I downloaded the game, and I gotta say, its Awesome, and definately for Casuals, I'm not a huge MMORPG player, but this game made my experience better. Plus I love the funny little names for the Armor items, and Weapons.

Free is always good. I tire of paying monthly for MMO's.

I've been playing for a few weeks and it's pretty good for being free. And only FIVE DOLLARS/ month to be a member, what a deal. Definitely a new and casual but not light, also funny, experience.

I might try this since I have yet to get into MMOs but I think what will really get me playing is something like Tabula Rasa which is looking great.
