NCsoft inks two-game Double Fusion deal

Korean publisher's free-to-play massively multiplayer games will feature shills courtesy of San Francisco in-game ad firm.

As the industry embraces in-game advertising, companies specializing in the sale and placement of those commercial spots are fighting for every spare inch of ground they can get. Today, San Francisco-based Double Fusion added a pair of new titles to its portfolio, announcing a deal with Korean publisher NCsoft to provide in-game ads for a pair of free-to-play massively multiplayer online games.

The NCsoft games in question are the recently released fantasy action role-playing game Dungeon Runners and the upcoming giant-robot fighting game Exteel. While the ad revenue will contribute to NCsoft's bottom line, both games will be supported primarily by the sale of in-game items and optional player membership programs.

Dungeon Runners came out in May and is available for download now, while Exteel is currently in open beta testing.

    @XeroComplex
    It would be fine for Dungeon Runners, actually - they're more of a MMO Spoof anyhow. Hell, it might well be perfect. Exteel (from what I've read) is a futuristic shooter with city environments, so it should be fine too. Hell, works okay in MxO too. All depends on the RPG and how its handled.

    And keep in mind Guild Wars' revenue model hinges on you continually buying the new GW games to pay for the online - that's 4 games (3 standalone, 1 expansion)... I've probably spent $190 on Guild Wars myself!

    Ads?

    Only on tv and radio...and in magazines...and movies. And at ball games, on buses, and milk cartons, and t-shirts, and bananas, and written on the sky. But not in dreams! No sirree!

    And I, overcome with disgust, would rather play a game like Guild Wars that has no monthly fee and costs just as much as a regular game. In my opinion, in-game advertising would destroy an RPG. There's no way you're going to feel part of a fantasy world if you see advertisements for Coke at every item shop and advertisements for the US army at every weaponsmith...

    In-game advertising is a step too far. It's one thing if they exist in free to play games, but if they exist in other places too, it's a slap in the face to players.

    "It will be a while before we see a free game that's got graphics on par with a pay to play game."

    True, but the free games need to keep their hardware requirements lower so more computers (possible customers) can run it.

    Imagine the day when something like WoW will have Burger Kings in it rather than an inn! XD
    Actually.. I could totally imagine a GTA/Saints Row style MMOG with that exact type of advertising in it!
    Would be pretty cool in my opinion.

    Games are expensive. If ads mean free, I'll take it
