Diablo III Q&A gets classy

Blizzcon 2009: From paladins to monks, Blizzard developers field questions about the class system in their forthcoming RPG.

Who Was There: Representatives from just about every facet of the Diablo III design team, including the lead programmer, art director, lead world designer, quest designer, lead level designer, sound designer, senior producer, and game director.

What Did They Talk About: Since there was no formal presentation, the Blizzard team was at the mercy of questions from the audience for the duration of the panel, but there was some interesting insight into the Diablo III development process. One of the first questions asked dealt with the issue of hacking--a distinct problem with the original Diablo and its sequel that let people make duplicates of the best items of the game without working for them. The Blizzard team said that it has learned a lot from Diablo II and from World of Warcraft in regard to this issue and it plans to make Diablo III as hack-free as possible.

The next few questions--about player-vs.player (PVP) and Battle.net functionality--couldn't really be answered, but the team did its best. In regard to PVP, Blizzard doesn't support the idea of going hostile at any time, meaning that they don't want someone to join your game and then try to kill you. It hurts cooperative play and even discourages it. Still, Blizzard knows that PVP is important and that there are large communities surrounding such features, and they plan to support them.

As for Battle.net, the team hasn't done a lot of designing around it since the service is mostly focused on Starcraft II for the time being, but they recognize that the original method for matchmaking wasn't the best. For Diablo III, they want to make sure that it's easier to play with friends or join games with similar players attempting to accomplish the same task.

There were plenty of story-oriented questions throughout the panel, but of course this is one of the several things Blizzard is being extremely tight-lipped about. The first of these questions surrounded the possible appearance of character classes, specifically the paladin and the necromancer. For the paladin, Blizzard said that they want to show what has happened with classes from previous games, even going so far as to say that specific characters from those games would appear in Diablo III.

A similar answer was given for the necromancer, whose existence as a non-player character was revealed during a demo of Diablo III at the show. And naturally, there was one question about the fate of Tyrael, the archangel who destroys the world stone at the end of Diablo II. Blizzard wouldn't say much about this fan-favorite character, but they did say that those in the High Heavens aren't pleased with his actions.

The bulk of questions came from fans wanting to know about gameplay specifics. The answer that got greatest applause from the crowd dealt with loot drops. In previous Diablo games, you could kill a boss, and a lower-level player could come along and steal your loot, but this won't be the case for Diablo III. All loot is generated on a per-player basis and can be seen only by that player, so if you defeat a boss, you'll have your own set of loot that will be different from others.

Other answers that got a reaction from the crowd came from the questions about a map editor and third-party UI add-ons. Because of the technology involved in randomly generating maps, there will be no map editor for Diablo III, and since the development team has spent so much time trying to make the UI as straightforward and as easy to understand as possible, the game won't support those add-ons either.

Some other interesting tidbits that came from the panel range from the status of the Horadric Cube to gambling. For the Horadric Cube, Blizzard said that it liked the way you could take items and turn them into new ones, but they weren't happy with the implementation, so they want to keep that mechanic but handle it a little differently.

As for gambling, Blizzard acknowledges that one of the biggest hurdles was understanding how it worked. Some people walked up, spent money, won nothing, and never gambled again, while the hardcore players used it frequently. For Diablo III, Blizzard wants to give people another method for earning items aside from going on runs, so expect to see gambling (or something like it) return, albeit with some tweaks.

Quote: "I wouldn't discount anything, but at this time, I can't say." -- a Blizzard representative's response when asked whether or not the monk will be able to throw hadoukens.

The Takeaway: The main messages that Blizzard tried to convey with this panel is that the team is trying to grow the world of Diablo III while simultaneously making the series more accessible than it already is. Therefore, much of the focus is on the gameplay and ensuring that nothing gets in the way of making a smooth and entertaining gameplay experience that doesn't require hours upon hours of dedication to get the most out of it.

well,i can say a lot about this..and considering im a diablo fanboy from the 90's ,guess i will,well..the graphics.blizzard knows not all the d2 players have great computers and thats where the fan base for this game will be from (duh).(diablo 2 can be ran on a 233mhz computer with dial up internet, think about it) so thers my thought on that aspect.im looking at my other computer right now on d2 on east server atm there are 45390 users playing 31339 games of d2 lod ..thats a nice chunk for a 10 year old game.(granted that can be seen at any given time,it obviously does vary) and that was out of 135736 total playing 39215 games on battle.net alone.
as for my thought on tyreal and the gods bein pissed at him..my money says he's gonna be a boss in the mid to end of the game.lastly for now..
if this game is pay to play ..im not getting world of diablo..bad enough the graphics are close to that of WoW ..but oh well..you can run WoW on a modest system..so..time will tell..ps no PvP this will flop, and as for the hacks ..ty ..sick of em as it is..but.. they hacked WoW and wc3 to the point blizzard was at a standstill(patch and reset on d2 has been delzayed 3 months now) so..if they can hack WoW ..wouldnt surprise me here..well..like i said ..time will tell

I've never been a hardcore fan of the diablo series, first game I didn't even understand it, Diablo 2 was another story I didn't finish it but I did enjoy it, now with the engine blizzard is using on this game I can confidently say "We are looking at the next of Blizzard's blockbusters".

Although I'm a little dissapointed about the graphics, when you compare them to the graphics of the upcoming SC2 one can not do anything but wonder, has blizzard despite all its talent, wants to stick only to WoW graphics, nevertheless i'm expecting this game (hopefully i'll have a better computer when it comes out XD ).

Diablo III will be another revolution, the only bad things are light radius, dropping potion, cartoon graphic. Too bad, it would hit 10 then definitely

sc2 is supposed to be sc1 with new coat. Those who didnt play sc1 will probably play it now cause it got acceptable graphics. and they might love it or hate it, who cares. same with diablo3, its basically diablo2 on steroids. there's a reason why mario and zelda games are always good, cause it's the same winning game at the core.

@Diernes: I understand where you're coming from. I also felt that Blizzard wanted to mix World of Warcraft and Diablo, which would suck. But after watching the gameplay videos, I kinda liked the fact they decided to maintain the old-school feel. That's why I didn't bother with the lack of *really* new characters and so.

Well, I can't say much about StarCraft II, because I'm not really a RTS fan. I got addicted to Warcraft II: Battle.net Edition and then I stopped with RTSes. So far, I'm with ya. StarCraft II does look like the first one, but with remaked graphics. I hope I'm wrong. =)

However, looking at *all* the games released by Blizzard, I can't give you a single example of a mediocre game. Not even the oldies, such as Blackthorne and Warcraft: Orcs 'n Humans are bad. Considering the fact that Blizzard never fails on game developing, I guess they'll not screw up with these new titles.

Simply because I havent seen anything that has got me excited and I am suck of the boring class design. As for SC II whats it actually doing apart from a new coat of paint?

Relic are actually pushing the rts genre further. There is something to be said for if it's not broke ect.... but Blizzard are just resting on ntheir laurels. This Diablo just reeks of being designed by the WOW team and thats a game i have nothing but hatred for. I am also angry they said the necro wasnt in the game because they werent bringing back any new classes, and on the other hand they have the barbarian and now the monk which was from diablo 1.

So far the wizard is the only class I am actually interested and thats sad, considering I played all the classes in D2 bar the Barb.

Why this hate about the Monk fella? I see him as a proper replacement to the Assassin. And, please, explain me why so many Diablo fans are bothered with the Wizard class? The game needs a spellcaster character, so they gave a different name this time (since "Sorceror" and "Sorcerer" were used in the first Diablo and its sequel).

And, as stated above: "Therefore, much of the focus is on the gameplay and ensuring that nothing gets in the way of making a smooth and entertaining gameplay experience that doesn't require hours upon hours of dedication to get the most out of it." Nuff said, from my point of view.

To Diernes: No, I disagree. You said that Diablo II, Warcraft and Starcraft were amazing titles in the past, so what makes you think that Diablo III and Starcraft II will suck? The games weren't even released yet. You're blaming Blizzard for their upcoming titles for no reason, IMO.

After I try the game (Diablo III, for example), I'll have an opinion about it. Until then, it's all expeculation. As far as I'm concerned, they're just improving the original formula. Let's wait and see if it will work.

Innovation is not always a good thing.. Why fix something when it isn't broken?

Blizzard knows they stumbled on some great formulas for their games.. why go and mess it all up on something you have no idea will work with the community until the game releases.

Granted, Innovation can be a good thing too. But you can't go too heavy on Innovation otherwise you ruin the spirit of the game you are trying to improve.

Britney spears sells millions of albums to, does that make her music perfection?......

    Popularity doesnt always mean good.

Blizzard have made some quality titles in the past, but I really think they are starting to ride on the coatails of their successes at this point.

Because of the rampart fanboism which goes along with anything they do, with this publisher I think the whole industry gets a little warped about how good their games actually are.

Yeah I know my statements are unpopular, but someone has to say it....

For their times Diablo 2, Starcraft and warcraft were amazing titles. Things have moved on though, we need something new and special especially in regard to the Action RPG, but I am just not seeing it yet. Blizzard north were disbanded and it's obvious the WOW people are working on this version of our beloved franchise.

Many hours of my life will disappear once this game is released. Hope it sticks to the basics of the genre while giving new content in every regards.

    So excited about D3!

although I agree with Diernes... I want to see Blizzard announce a brand new IP sometime... seems like they are just milking the same 3 franchises that started over a decade ago.

Nonetheless, Diablo is my favorite series from them! :]
