NewsSpots: GTA IV, Spector, mtvU, .hack

Second Grand Theft Auto IV trailer dated; Junction Point Studios' new game teased; Darfur Is Dying getting worldwide release; single-player MMOG ending this fall.

GTA IV

Niko will be looking for someone else special soon.

Second GTA IV trailer due June 28
Last month, Rockstar Games released the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV. Today, shortly after Rockstar parent Take-Two Interactive dispelled rumors that it would delay the eagerly anticipated Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game, the publisher announced a date for a new trailer for the title. On June 28, Rockstar will launch the second video preview of GTA IV, titled "Looking for that Special Someone." The first trailer, "Things will be different," revealed the game will be set in a new version of Liberty City redesigned to be a near-exact replica of New York City.

Spector slips more info on upcoming game
When ex-Ion Storm head Warren Spector founded Junction Point Studios in 2005, speculation ran rampant on the nature of his first project. Compounding the issue, the Deus Ex creator hasn't exactly been forthright with information either. New teaser concept art for his studio's upcoming "fantasy" game has been posted to the company's Web site, accompanied by a few taunting words from Spector himself. "When we DO announce what we're doing," he said, "half the world's going to think we're crazy and half the world's going to think it's the coolest thing since sliced bread--how great is that?!"

mtvU propagating genocide-awareness game
Games are quickly becoming a medium for activists and organizations to express their message. Collegiate television channel mtvU announced today at the 4th Annual Games For Change that it would help highlight the crisis in the Sudan by globally relaunching Darfur Is Dying, a title created by students at the University of Southern California. In the game, players assume the role of refugees and must negotiate with those threatening their survival. It is intended to provide people with real-world advice on how to help solve the crisis in the titular civil war-wracked region. mtvU will also help translate the game into Chinese, Arabic, and Spanish.

.hack trilogy closing out this fall
Even if .hack didn't rank among Namco Bandai's top-10 sellers of the 2006 fiscal year, it's been an interesting experiment in interlacing video games, anime, and manga. Namco Bandai today announced the third and final video game installment in its .hack series will be available for the PlayStation 2 this fall. Titled .hack//G.U. Vol.3: Redemption, players will once again jump in to Haseo's shoes and log in to .hack's unique brand of single-player massively multiplayer online simulation. Redemption will feature two new towns and dungeons, as well as new enemies, steam-bike parts, steam-bike missions, and cards for the Crimson VS card battle game.

#uck all you guys with bloody consoles, PC users Made Rockstar with GTA & GTA II. It gripes me big time that PC release is held up because of BOX JOCKEYS. Get into real gaming with a PC and see what your made of without the Joy vibrators!

A piece of concept art on Junction Point's website looks kinda familiar to me. One of the pics sort of looks like the Hong Kong map from a little FPS/RPG game designed by Warren Spector and has some all-too-familiar looking silhouette of a guy wearing a trench coat jumping onto a balcony. Could this be the much wanted remake of one of the best games ever made? A guy from Eidos (the last company Warren worked for) did announce such a game about a month ago.

    @JingWarrior

    ....

Well, MxAxSxH and ObiKKa have taken the words right outta my mouth, so I suggest (if you have the attention span long enough to still be here) you just read what they said.

And then sit in a corner and feel ashamed of yourself.

"Spector himself. "When we DO announce what we're doing," he said, "half the world's going to think we're crazy and half the world's going to think it's the coolest thing since sliced bread--how great is that?!""

LOL. I love Spector - he is my favourite game designer!

Who cares? I do; as do the legions of players who have played spector's creations over the years. Do not be so quick to dismiss, it shows you in a poor light. The problem with gta is, the biggest change to the series has been the move to 3D, and in this day and age that doesn't really cut it anymore. True it has a solid if now slightly worn gameplay mechanic, but the series has only survived this long because of it's brilliant content, and the fact that they have very little competition.

GTA4, will undoubtedly be a great game, but with some innovation on R*'s part it could be one of the best of all time.

Lowenergycycle, Who cares about warren spector's geekfest. If you cannot see how much GTA is the worlds best games, then you mustnt be playing them right! Gta offers the player an amazing virtual playground and gives them access to vehicles and equpiment that have almost endless possibiliys. What other game lets you fly a harrier jump jet over dessert, mountain and forest, parachute drop from the plane into your own private airstrip, catch a train for the city, change into your tuxedo your hotel suite, then gambe millions in a casino, finishing off the night going to a strip bar..... My point may have been lost in the analogy. The point is, that GTA creates a world full of potential. Maybe you as a player never live up to the potential...or experience the fullness of a GTA landscape. I admit, some of the missions could be better thought out and that some of the game mechanics are buggy ( like buying clothes taking hours) but none of the minor flaws can detract from the master piece of gaming that is the GTA Series
