GDC '08: Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach Updated Impressions

Find out what's in store as D&D Online reaches its second anniversary this month.

SAN FRANCISCO--It's always a milestone when a massively multiplayer online role-playing game reaches its second anniversary. After all, it's a crowded genre, and quite a number of games aren't fortunate enough to last that long. Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach hasn't exactly set the world on fire, but it's been plugging along steadily. Now with its second anniversary looming, we got an update from senior producer Kate Paiz.

To mark the game's birthday on February 26, Paiz said that one of the initiatives planned is something called price-and-lock. Basically, it's a way to offer players a discount. They can sign up for six-month blocks at $59.94, which breaks down to $9.99 per month, about three dollars less per month than a regular subscription. Both new players and veteran ones can sign up with this package, and they can renew the subscription at that discounted price every six months, so long as they remain an active subscriber.

Paiz also said that the developers are going to shake things up with a "world-changing" live event, though what that will be remains a mystery. She did note that the game has grown and evolved considerably since its launch two years ago. There's twice as much content now than at launch. The level cap was recently bumped to 16, and there are plans to increase it to 20 by year's end.

Future plans include the addition of the monk class. That unarmed fighter is highly popular with players of the pen-and-paper game, as well as other D&D RPGs. The monk is due out in May as part of a new module. In all, the message at GDC is that Dungeons & Dragons Online is still evolving, and D&D fans might want to give it a fresh look soon.

The game was slow to start off with, a small amount of players was just one of the factors that dragged it all, annoying bugs visual errors complications, and vista Launcher bugs make this game really annoying, If only they fixed those things and managed to advertise a bit more, this game would be one of the best mmo's around.
(you should try this game, it takes a fresh approach and has the best Real TIme Combat of all MMO's)

Ths is a great game. Gamespot I think is too biased towards WoW to give any other game a shot, I think. It's action packed and very in depth character customization, you know D&D style. As an added plus, mainly mature adults play this game, so you won't run into 11 year old tools who think they know it all, which is very refreshing. Give it a shot!

I played this for a month when it first came out, and I felt it had potential, but I prefer Guild Wars' camera, which is not locked to the direction the character is facing when performing an action, as the DDO camera is. Also, at that time the single-player content wasn't very well developed, and I like to solo so I don't have to deal with grouping and player interaction. However, I did play again during a free period about a year ago, and I may do so again. This game DOES have the best dungeons I've seen in any computer game yet, MMO or otherwise.

This is an undiscovered gem. It has the best real-time combat of any MMO out there, instanced dungeons and loot, and no camping! Plus, its players are generally adults.

ele975 - the sort of person who comments on subjects they know absolutely nothing about. You've never played the game, have you?

    In response to ele975,

This game has the best dungeons, that's why. They're fully interactive with traps, pit falls, alternate routes, and even engaging boss battles.

I dont know many mmos with real time combat and almost complete instanced content?

At least they tried to break the mould a bit, if you come out with comments like that what bloody MMO is there to play that doesn't resemble its predecessors?
