Dawn of Magic First Impressions

This action role-playing game feels inspired by Harry Potter and features plenty of magic.

Dawn of Magic is a fantasy action role-playing game that was formerly known as Blood Magic. Being an action RPG, your job will be to run around a fantasy world and kill a lot of creatures. However, while many action RPGs, such as Diablo, are inspired by traditional fantasy, Dawn of Magic feels like it draws inspiration from both fantasy and Harry Potter. That's because you play as a budding mage in the game, armed only with magic.

The game, which is being developed by SkyFallen Entertainment, is set in a colorful fantasy setting. The immortal Mordo has been banished from his realm of magic to Earth, where he lives as a mortal. To get even, Mordo must regain his lost powers and destroy the Earth. Where you come in is that you can either try to stop Mordo, or you can help him. The choice is entirely up to you, and what you decide affects the course of the game.

We mention Harry Potter because the game begins in a magical academy full of professors and their students. You can play as one of four characters enrolled in the academy. There's the fat friar, the weird gypsy, the awkward scholar (who sports very Harry Potter-style glasses), or the baker's wife. These are clearly not your typical fantasy heroes. Once your character is selected, you'll find yourself at the school, where you must get your first quests to venture out into the wild and dangerous world, full of goblins and other creatures to battle.

This is a magic-heavy game, and there are more than a dozen different fields of magic that your character can specialize in. Moreover, spells can be combined and blended, which ups the magical possibilities considerably. Magic is your only weapon in the game, as you won't need to rely on swords or bows and arrows. With that said, you can use magic to morph your character into a deadly weapon. Examples include turning your arms into swords or summoning bats to circle around you protectively.

Dawn of Magic has a lot of atmosphere in it, as well as a fair amount of destruction in the environment. We had fun destroying doors and objects at the school, which resulted in many students chasing after us. The game is scheduled to ship later this year.

Ok ok ppl, settle down, maybe the game does look pretty sweeet in High-Res, but is that it?? C'mon, we can have the bloodiest eye-candy-eye-poper-eye-eye-captain graphics running on a dozen multi-c0re GPUs with Super Advance EarthQuake Proof Physics card (OverClocked too) and have what? a lousy gameplay? Sure theres some nifty magic tricks we can blend with, Fire attack with lightning flashes, bones magic fire crackers bla bla. i think we got it backwards now days. Its the gameplay we aim for, THEN the graphix to spice things up. ooh and characters too. Cool characters will make way for a cool gameplay, cause it inspires as the drive factor for the whole game. *Prince of Persia, Beyond Good and Evil, Star Craft (Koreans are still playing it ) Halo, Half Life, Doom, C&C, Planescape torment, Baldurs Gate, Ice Wind Dale, Never Winter Nights, Dungeon Seige...*gasp ok ... ill keep it simple. MARIO BROS...hehe thats what i call a game. Think gameplay, Think Game.

OMG!!! ... First of all, im a real BIG fan of RPG games. When i bought this, the guy selling this said it's the next best thing to Diablo! I'm like Whoa!! gotta have it!! .. next thing i know, theres blood on my keyboard, the game is so BAD, my brain melts. I've played alot of RPG games, and i've never seen such horrible GrFX/interface and gameplay. Usually we'll know a good game from the first mouse control or keyboard command, then you'll make sense of the whole mechanics of the game by just spending a few minutes of trial and error. Not this game.(even the tutorial is confusing) Then we'll get so drawn into the storyline, you just forget its a game!, Not this game. Then you'll start thinking, hey, maybe i wont finish this (The greatest game of all time)game at all, or my FUN is over....NOT THIS GAME. People...AVOID RUN TAKE COVER!

interface really sucks, it affects gameplay. it also has a lacking movement and camera control. graphics sucks, and it still needs a good system to play on higher quality, but it still sucks higher or lower.. while in a forest you cannot even easily see yourself in the screen, finding objects on the ground is impossible, zoom-in is useless it doesn't help a bit, i'd prefered a higher zoom-out .. one thing is "nice" : to have multiple spell classes.. sorry for the harsh comment but truly, for a crpg player this game is suffering..

You're kidding right? This game feels like a titan quest and dungeon siege 2 hack-- the graphics suck BAD and the voice overs are as bad as it gets. If you buy this game, use it for kindling.

It's already out in Europe (well, at least in Germany), and so far, every major gaming magazine said that it's really bad.
