E3 2001 Preshow ReportDark Age of Camelot
Mythic Entertainment's mythological online role-playing game will be on the show floor.
Dark Age of Camelot will be a fantasy-themed online role-playing game that will be based on classical European mythology. The game itself will take place across three realms--Midgard, Albion, and Hibernia--the three fragments of what was originally King Arthur's united domain. Each of the three realms is loosely based on a different country in medieval Europe; for instance, Midgard will be based on ancient Scandinavia, and lets you start out with characters such as dwarf berserkers, troll warriors, and kobold shamans. Hibernia will be based on ancient Ireland, and is home to playable characters such as Celtic druids, elfin enchanters, and half-giant warriors. And Albion will be based on ancient England, and is the homeland of King Arthur and the forces of British arms men, scouts, and clerics.
But Arthur has fallen, and the members of each realm have been called to war. To prepare, you will start your characters' lives as a base character class, then later advance to a more powerful profession. Each nation will let you start out as one of four base classes: a fighter class, a thief class, a wizard class, or a healer class. However, Dark Age of Camelot will feature a total of 30 different advanced classes, so that you will have plenty of race-class combinations to choose from.
Once you have advanced your character to a sufficient level of experience, you'll be able to participate in Dark Age of Camelot's most intriguing feature: realm-based player-vs.-player combat. Since King Arthur's kingdom was split into three parts, it's up to each of the three realms to reunite the land through conquest. Specifically, you will be able to stage invasions on enemy realms, defeat enemy players, and seize the magical artifacts that have been scattered across the three lands. Staging a raid on enemy territory won't be easy, as it will require an organized assault from a well-balanced raiding party composed of wizards, fighters, clerics, and thieves. Dark Age of Camelot's character classes will have unique abilities that will lend themselves well to interesting group tactics.
Dark Age of Camelot is scheduled for release later this year. We'll have more coverage right from the show floor soon.
