GDC 2002: Micro Forte offers BigWorld

The Australian developer offers an early-access program for its online role-playing game engine.

Micro Forte, the developer of Fallout Tactics, has announced an early-access program for its BigWorld game engine. The program will let developers license the engine, which is the result of an investment of some three years of development and about $8 million dollars. The BigWorld engine offers 3D graphics that are fully compatible with 3D Studio MAX and its plugins, and features a model viewer and world editor that lets developers create and place their 3D characters and objects into their games. BigWorld allows for 3D mesh deformation and interpolated character animation, as well as for terrain height-map editing, real-time weather effects, and day/night cycles.

BigWorld's Linux-based server code features interchangeable components that can be dynamically reassigned to ensure continuous connectivity, even during downtime due to maintenance or technical problems. According to Micro Forte, BigWorld's networking code should let millions of players play in the same world at once, without "sharding"--that is, separating players onto different servers. More information on the BigWorld engine is available at the BigWorld Web site.
