Obsidian developing Sega's Alien RPG

Studio behind KOTOR II, Neverwinter Nights 2 crafting sci-fi-movie-based role-player for "next-generation systems," PC; Gearbox working on Alien FPS?

Some acclaimed creative minds have been involved in the Alien franchise, including directors Ridley Scott, James Cameron, and David Fincher, who crafted the sterile, spooky sci-fi movies, and Swiss surrealist H.R. Giger, who created the looks for the titular creatures.

Gamers can add one more name to that list, as Sega today announced that role-playing game specialist Obsidian Entertainment is developing the upcoming RPG set in the Alien universe.

The game, which as of now remains untitled, is coming to PCs and "next-generation systems." Sega has not dated the project but on Monday said that the first Alien-licensed game wouldn't arrive before 2009. No further details of the game were mentioned.

With Monday's announcement, Sega also revealed that a first-person shooter based on the movies was also in development but did not reveal the game's developer. However, Internet reports, including one from Gaming Target, noticed a few company names in the copyrights on Sega's Alien teaser page.

Along with mention of Obsidian, which was confirmed today, was Gearbox Software, the team behind the Brothers in Arms franchise. The two names were quickly removed, according to Gaming Target, and as of press time and following today's news, Obsidian's name was back on the page.

Sega did not respond to requests for comment as of press time.

    Making an RPG in the Alien universe is an awesome idea. I only hope they make a good story, and not just use 'rpg' as an excuse to give some extra color to an otherwise action based game. There is huge potential with this setting, as long as it stays authentic to the original movies.

    Excited that an Alien game is coming out after so long but I dunno how its gonna work out being an RPG. =/

    Awesome. I love the Alien franchise and can't wait to see what they got in store for us. I think I'd like the FPS more than the RPG, but I hope their both good games.

    I'm kinda confused here... is Osidian / Sega making 2 rpg's, one being based on Alien and another one yet to be titled or are these the same game? Well I always tought they were the same game, but I was just now browsing over wikipedia and check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsidian_Entertainment
    It basically says that there are 2 projects in development with different names, one named "Georgia" and another one named "Connecticut"...

    Give me a Deus-Ex style FPS/RPG hybrid set in the Aliens universe, and that would be kick-ass!

    From the recent games that Obsidian produced, I would expect that the better ending of the game would be if you played the Aliens themselves.

    Both KoToR II & NWN II Endings sucked for the good guys...

    I think that is ace..alien vs predator ... was pretty cool and i bet this game will look cool when released.. i twill look so beutiful... oh and do one about red dwarf i can help!!!

    To tubichat: Obsidian doesn't have the Predator license, so it won't be that, regardless. See Obsidian's forums for details.

    I personaly hope it's more even more action based First Person RPG than, Oblivion or Hellgate London. RPG games that say they are first person, still have that feeling of a third person game. I want an RPG that really feels like a first person game, and doesnt just look like one. At least there are games like STLAKER coming out, that are FPS, wit hRPG elements.
    In fact, I would have rather wanted to see a brand new First Person Shooter, in the ALIENS world. Maybe with RPG elements. But not fully RPG. And an updated version of the DOOM 3 engine.

    I hope like Oblivion you can switch to first person. 3rd person can be done well but in the alien/terminator/predator games I always prefered 1st person.

    SInce the makers of KOTOR II is making it then I guess this game might be good.
