We recently had a chance to see the updated content that will appear in Aion: Tower of Eternity at launch. The new updates are part of the "1.5 update," which has already gone live in the original Asian version of the game (NCSoft plans to keep the Western version of game more or less up-to-date with the Asian game within two months' worth of updates), and the US team already has an established pipeline to take content from Asia and translate it into English while also localizing the content for Western audiences by adding many more quests and story-driven details. The US team suggests that about 75% of the content remains the same, but a great deal of content is still added by the localization to make the new stuff more-relatable; for instance, many new "Western-looking" character faces that resemble well-known Western actors have been added. Also, humor is a big part of Aion's lore (both in the original version and the Western version), but not all jokes translate from culture to culture.

The pre-release version of Aion just got a bunch of new pre-release content with the 1.5 update.

Otherwise, Aion's prerelease preparation continues to chug along with more than a million players in the beta and more than 3 million hours logged worldwide; the game is, again, already up and running in Asia and planned for launch in North America and Europe soon, with approximately 6 servers per territory to make sure each area gets good performance. The 1.5 update adds 14 new zones to explore, many of which focus on player-versus-environment ("PvE") gameplay, including new hunting grounds and new raid bosses to challenge. Interestingly, players in Asia have actually requested additional PvE and raid content--uncharacteristic for an audience that typically seems to crave heavy-duty player-versus-player ("PvP") content, though some of Aion's higher-end PVE content has a competitive bent to it, since raid bosses carry the best loot and rewards, so in many cases, teams of players will compete to see who can get to the boss and the loot quickest.

Aion's Western development team described the ongoing reception of the game to Western players as being positive. The game has several features that might appeal most strongly to really hardcore players, such as a positional combat system that grants minor offensive and defensive bonuses to characters who are moving while fighting, and a "stigma" system that lets you customize your character's role by embedding stigma stone items into your weapons and armor--the recent 1.5 update actually added three new additional slots and new ways for stigmas to branch out so that players can create even more-customized characters.

But the team is also looking to build in other features for players of all skill levels. For instance, Aion will have various chat channels for different languages, as well as a handy auto-join group feature that will let you search for and remotely (and automatically) join open groups. In addition, even though Aion's characters start out as tall, shapely humanoids, it offers a full body customization that some players have really taken to, even going so far as to create entire legions (the game's version of guilds) that look similar--for instance, there are no dwarf characters in the game by default, but some players have gone so far as to create dwarf guilds that recruit only characters that look like dwarves.

You can fly into action in Aion later this year.

We then jumped into the game itself to see some of the new zones that have been added, including an Abyss PvPvE zone full of new "Balaur" monsters (the fiends that inhabit the Abyss that separates the two halves of Aion's world), as well as a higher-level version of the game's early training ground, overrun by the Balaur, who have started to emerge into the other parts of the world as part of the 1.5 update's storyline. Like with Aion's other zones, the new zones are colorful and detailed, as are the monsters and characters.

Aion's beta events have come to a close and the game is gearing up for its launch in September.

definitely a must-play MMO, knowing the reputation of NCSoft and rave reviews of this game, i am sure this will not disappoint me. although i am planning to go back to WAR as well.

@drokmore, @DarkSid (So GS sends you a notification message): To the guys looking for an alternative site, take a look at http://www.mmorpg.com/. I might just be repeating common knowledge, but I use that site to check up on the more 'secluded' titles, or if I'm looking for MMO information (Latest update on Aion is 17/09/2009 and 10/09/2009 before that).

    Hope it helps.

Completed 1-10 level on beta. Very nicely done, had quests for all levels. Plenty of peeps running around to interact with. It has a lot of just nice improvements on past MMOs that make it that much more enjoyable. Ran graphics all on high on a laptop with specs below recommended so should work on most pcs. No lag issues although it was a low population server. It's starting to get more interesting now that I have my subclass, I hope to try out the abyss before the betas done.

the game is not that big known because many people complained a lot about it but others like me knew the game was good and were waiting for 3 years to buy it, infact I pre-ordered it already, the people that watched tried the game and complained did like different kind of game or style, that is why nobody is saying nothing about this big bomb coming soon to crush most of the famous mmo, NCsoft is a very good agency for pc games expecially for mmo like guild of war 1 and 2 champions and Aion all the same hand you should get the idea of quality blizzard is going to have problems soon

I played the open beta last night for 6hrs and was completely amazed at its quality of game play. im just as excited for this release as i was for WoW when it first came out. The graphics are beautiful, way above blizzards "cartoon-like" standards. it sort of has a Perfect World Int feel to it (PWI has been flying there toons around for the last year) but Aion takes it to a new level. Very easy to use interface though i havent seen or heard anything about modding interface styles which i enjoy doing for my benefit. I havent had a chance to try out the pvp aspects though. Overall, I see this game turning into a nice competitor for WoW.

I've been thinking similar thoughts. I mean look a blizzard games, diablo 3 is likely still years away and has been getting new updates almost daily. WOW is always getting updates. I was a bit skeptical about this game mainly because well I've heard absolutely nothing about it. Its important to have a large base so there's motivation to make new content for MMOs. It has 3.5 million followers geesh, we should be hearing tons.

DarkSid unfortunately I have not come across a game site with the high production values of GS, also the community here is another reason to be a part of the site, but I understand where your coming from, all things pass in time I only hope GS can return to objectivity.

This game looks sexier than Guild Wars.

...and Guild Wars was damn sexy.

I couldn't agree more with DarkSid. Where is all the Aion coverage? The last interview with the dev. was in APRIL! If that were to happen with the new WoW X-pac, fanboys would be going nuts. Hey GS how about some unbiased coverage here. How about a review of the Korean version or a quick review of the beta, or just an official preview shheeeshhhh. Throw us a freakin' bone here.

With WoW not available in China at the moment it's worldwide subscriptions has dropped to around 6.5 million. Aion's worldwide subscriptions without the NA and European markets open yet is up to 3.5 million. Why isn't this not on the 'Overall' or 'Coming soon' pages? OOOHHHH WoW revamped their water in the next expac. GG Bliz

Gamespot has proven it's not an objective site anymore. Its heavily influenced by certain companies ***cough Blizzard*** and others. I find it hard to believe their ratings on games these days. I used to really trust this site but can’t anymore. Any suggestions for a more objective game site???

Gamespot seems to be a Wowspot. I wonder how much Blizzard donates to Gamespot not to put Aion in coming soon page.

Played the closed beta and am very impressed with the overall of the game. Guilds are already forming and many of them are soon to be x-wow players. I think I will choose to be a Priest, since it seems to have a little of everything - magic, melee, better armor than the mage, and healing. I played a mage and it took me a good half hour just to create my char, cause the choices of literally everything are unending. You get alot of gold (kinah) very quickly, and the lower lvls of leveling are very fast. This game is very storyline driven, where I found in wow, the story sort of gets lost. They have separate quests-one for the story and standard for all else. I wasn't high enough for the Abyss, but I can't wait to see it. I think anyone who likes mmo's, should order this game. Not trying to push it, but what I have seen of it, it's a super game.

OK first the East (Asian) players tend to like PVP more and PVE (quests and story line) less. 2nd I'd recommend Guild Wars for start MMORPG. It has lower cap level, better graphics than WOW (unless you like cartoon characters) and it doesn't have a monthly cost. Also by what I have heard its closer to Guild Wars than WOW. Aion and Guild Wars is made by the same company.

I don't get, they say it will be more western by adding more quests and story driven content, i.e. more to do. So do Koreans actually enjoy just sitting there and grinding?
