Age of Conan expands with Rise of the Godslayer

First expansion to Funcom's M-rated PC MMO RPG will be playable during this week's GamesCom in Cologne, Germany.

Toward the end of June, Norwegian game developer Funcom debuted what it called the "biggest and most influential" update to its massively multiplayer online role-playing game Age of Conan yet. Titled The Gangs of Tarantia, the update added in a new district for gamers to explore, as well as overhauled the game's RPG and crafting mechanics, included new items and quests, and implemented a final round of residual tweaks and fixes from the game's launch in May 2008.

Launch bugs thus addressed, Funcom today announced as part of GamesCom 2009 in Cologne, Germany, the first full expansion to Age of Conan, a move first teased in August 2008. Titled Rise of the Godslayer, the expansion introduces the Empire of Khitai, a region with culture and traditions mimicking the Far East. Funcom did not say when it expects to launch the expansion and had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

"Since the turn of the year, the team has been working hard on bringing the Empire of Khitai to life," Fumcon game director Craig Morrison said of the expansion. "Our focus now is on expanding on the strengths of the game by providing massive new regions of the world to explore, and the Empire of Khitai offers a whole new perspective on the Conan lore and universe."

Of the new features included in the expansion, Funcom promises an all-new storyline, as well as new regions, faction gameplay, and an alternate advancement system. The storyline draws its inspiration from Conan the Barbarian creator Robert E. Howard's story "The Tower of the Elephant." The story involves the events following Conan's defeat of the Elephant God, with chaos erupting as the Hyborian Age finds itself with one less deity.

Funcom will offer the first hands-on time with Rise of the Godslayer from this year's GamesCon, and GameSpot is on hand to cover. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of Age of Conan.

I just got into this game and playing before WoW and Guild Wars this is my favorite. Looks great and the story is better driven forward. However as everyone has said before though I just entered the game so the bugs don't seem existant to me since it is so much later. The only draw back is smaller population as compared to other mmo games. Not to say that there is no one to play with. I was running around with people today.

Games have been 15$ a month before WoW. People just seem to think WoW started everything.

suppy and demand geez. why is almost every game stuck on $15/month. if you are a smaller game like AOC or WAR you need to lower your monthly price. i am not supporting playing for free as you normally get what you pay for, but just because WoW charges 15 doesn't mean you have to. i would go buy this game today if i only paid $10/month like i do for LOTRO.

Looks definetly nice. I don't know why u ppl are dissliking this game so much? We'll i got the game since 2 months (after i fled from the WoW madness ^^.. it was hard tho') now so i didn't played at the beginning and don't know what problems it had back then, and honestly said i simply don't care. The game's world got a really great atmosphere, superb combat system and the best graphics of all MMO's.

And @ gswhite i'll just say: Piss off WoW kid

@Kanaric - Either you misunderstood my comments, or you were simply being contentious. I'll assume the it was the former.

@maer not anymore. The new patch of the Dark templar is killing the casters, and we are waiting the Conquerors upgrade now.

As long as there is a lot of single player stuff I be happy.

". I wish they could find a way - and a willingness - to make something like Age of Conan into a LAN RPG. "
Thats retarded. Its a MMO, not a lan game.

"I'm just not into the whole MMO thing, the PvP and online community stuff, but I really love the look of this, and a few other, MMOs"
Then you wouldn't want to play this game.... seriously. Its like saying you would play Call of Duty if it wasn't so violent.

What, no camels still? Oh, well. The visuals are impressive at least. When AoC's looks are at it's best, it pretty much blows away every other game on the market.

I respect these guys for hanging in there against the WOW monolith, but if they're now just finally fixing some launch bugs a year after the fact, they've got some serious issues to contend with.

@oopomop - I am guessing you didn't read the news that no one plays this pile of crap anymore. They lost their install base in the first year because their help desk is awful, their code is terrible and everyone left play something else.

@gswhite Im guessing you missed the news about how almost all that stuff is fixed now. Yes it had a beyond terrible launch, but now its actually a decent game.

Great more buggy crap from the Norwegian Game developers. I bought this game in anticipation that it would replace my 4 year fix with WoW. After numerous graphical issues and different crash bugs and after the developers run out of ideas on how to fix these issues I gave up. Run for your lives... It's AoC!!!!!!

I thought this game was going under, how are they releasing an expansion???

Having played WoW, Warhammer, and AoC, ive found something to enjoy in each. AoC had by far the best combat system and the voice acting at the beginning kept quests enganging and made things feel less repetitive. I started playing AoC pretty late, at a time when the game was updated and had much improved over the early versions of the game, the downside to this was the distinctive lack of players. If they can bring people back with some of these expansions, i would love to explore this game more.
