E3 '07: Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

We busted some jewels and some heads in this revamped Xbox Live! version of a puzzle classic.

Despite its long and heavily modified title, fans of puzzling and fighting will be happy to hear that Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is essentially the same game they fell in love with years ago. In fact, Capcom is calling the game a Meta-Emulation, which means that the core game is completely unchanged, but set within a shinier, prettier HD frame.

For example, the gems have all been redrawn to glisten delicately on your awesome flatscreen, but the characters have not. Guess they're saving that for Super Street Fighter II HD Remix, but fret not, puzzle fighters, because you'll get all the love you can handle when this game hits Xbox Live!, the PlayStation Network, or a PC near you for about 10 dollars.

That's because this version of Super Puzzle Fighter will come with the X, Y, and Z play modes and all the characters you remember (including Akuma, Dan and Devilot). There's also a redone version of X-Mode with newly balanced characters. Of course, if you just want to play the original Puzzle Fighter X-Mode, that is always an option. On the flip side, if you want to get really unfair you can always use the Counter Gem Edit feature to craft your own nasty, custom drop pattern.

On top of all that, there are both offline and online matches. While playing against friends at your house is always the best option, this version will also come with ranked online matches for the leaderboard climbers among you, as well as casual Quarter Matches where you and three other players take turns playing the winner, just like you would in an arcade.

With gussied-up graphics, a drop-pattern editor, newly balanced characters and two different online play modes, not to mention a modest price tag and some of the best puzzle gameplay ever pieced together, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix should be a safe and fun way to spend any loose change you have lying around when it drops onto PCs as well as the Live! and PSN services this summer.

    My wife and I played the PS1 version on my PS2 until our fingers bled. Then the PS2 died, I bought a "PSTwo", and the game doesn't work in it! I cannot WAIT for this to be released!

    If you've never played, this is not your typical puzzle game. As the multi-colored gems drop, you need to arrange them to build blocks of 4x4 or larger. Dropping a diamond on one of these blocks scores points for you, causes your character to perform a fighting move on your opponent, and also drops a pile of scattered gems on your opponent's screen. There is quite a bit of strategy since you may want to build giant blocks that destroy your opponent in one blow, or you might want to break smaller blocks as quickly as possible to keep the garbage falling on your opponent. I'm over-stimulated now... I need a beer and a nap.

    I cant wait, I have this game on PSP and GBA and remember falling in love with it on the Sega Saturn.

    I like the Street Fighter Puzzle Fighter and Sailor Moon Puzzle Fighter. This is a game worth getting.

    Love this game...my ex gf turn me on to it.I have it on PS1 and play on psp all the time.I can't wait to play you all on LIVE.

    This is SO worth $10. I still break out my PS1 copy all the time when friends come over and is possibly the best head-to-head puzzle game ever made.

    The features sound really kool and the HD feature really stands out... I think Street Fighter 4 is on it's way, but the way Street Fighter 3 didn't do really well at the arcades. Since Capcom are doing remakes in HD, i feel that it's a really good milestone for Capcom to make, I honstly think that Capcom are designing Street Fighter 4, but haven't gotten to the development stage yet.

    Just make a new hd streetfighter game already, with new animation, sprites, flashy finishers, combos, interactive backgrounds, 360 graphics, clothing textures, blood and a huge amount of characters to pick . what are you waiting for? why should i have to keep buying half a**ed renditions of the old games with the same sprites, i know capcom made a lot of money with resident evil, lost planet, devil may cry, dead rising and every streetfighter game they put out every year,. just give the people what we want, we are the ones who have to buy and play this stuff. do it for the fans. streetfighter 4 where are you?
