GDC '08: Guitar Rising First Look

This upcoming PC rhythm game borrows from Guitar Hero, but with real guitars.

SAN FRANCISCO--Looking oddly out of place among all the advanced computer technology on display at this year's GDC was the GameTank booth. What appeared to be an impromptu jam session was actually a demo for their upcoming rhythm game, Guitar Rising. This game aims to borrow the streaming-note gameplay formula of Guitar Hero, but with one very large catch: You're actually using a real guitar.

Scheduled for release on the PC, with a Mac version still being considered, Guitar Rising will let you plug any guitar of your choosing into your computer with a USB adapter. The one used at the GameTank booth was a regular Line 6 model available at most musical retailers.

Once set up, the game itself can best be described as combining the mechanics of the aforementioned Guitar Hero (or most any recent rhythm game, for that matter) with the look of text-based guitar tablature. There are six lines on the screen that represent the six strings, but instead of notes coming down vertically, they're coming in from right to left, so as to mimic the neck of the guitar. Another difference is that color-coordinated notes have been replaced with numbered ones that tell you which fret to finger.

To give you an idea of how this works, if you see the number seven scrolling across the second line from the bottom, that means you'll need to play an E note by pressing on the seventh fret of the A. Like most rhythm games, it's all about timing these notes when they reach the markers at the end of the line. Guitar players who have spent any time with standard tablature--the de facto notation format for the Internet--will find this to be like second nature, whereas those who've been groomed on the likes of Guitar Hero and Rock Band might see it as a bit more challenging.

GameTank is estimating a final tracklist of about 30 songs, and we got to take a crack at three of them: "Message in a Bottle" by the Police, "Mother" by Danzig, and "The Hardest Button to Button" by the White Stripes. We started on easy and worked our way up to the hard level of difficulty. Unsurprisingly, the tougher the setting, the more you feel like you're playing the actual song. "The Hardest Button to Button," in particular, felt like the real thing on the hard setting. It definitely felt a lot easier and more fun to learn a song this way, as opposed to static tabs found on guitar Web sites.

At this point, GameTank is still unsure whether to implement full chords in the final game (that is, strumming several strings at once) or to just keep things as they are. Currently, the game recognizes the notes only on a one-at-a-time basis, while totally doing away with embellishments such as slides, bends, and so forth.

Although advanced guitarists might not see much to like due to the game's inability to recognize advanced techniques, beginners hoping to build their finger dexterity while learning a few new songs might want to keep an eye out for Guitar Rising. There's currently no specific release date announced other than late 2008, but we'll keep you posted.

I can't wait for this I'm a guitar hero freak I can 5 star almost any of the songs on expert in all the 6 gh games that have been released and I play real guitar as well. The best thing about this game is that is has the potential to be a learning tool, which gh is absolutely not. (don't get me started, the tab moving the wrong way is just the tip of the iceberg) as a matter of fact when the first gh came out I had been able play a bunch of the songs that were in the game on real guitar but when I played em on gh on medium I couldnt even get through the song without getting booed off the stage. But I learned how to play gh and got very good., The ironic thing is it is gonna be the opposite for people that have only played gh and get a real guitar for this game. They are gonna have no idea what they are up against, (not to mention bloody fingers for a while) This game could perhaps be a great learning opportunity for many people, finally a guitar game that is fairly realistic, looks like it has a great learning curve, and a challenge for real guitar players and migrating gh players as well, I hope this is as good as it looks to be

I can not wait for this. A dream come true. Yea, hopefully it includes a range of stuff from beginner to fully advanced. Even something like the original miracle piano (the most insane learning tool ever for piano/keyboards. (I still own 2 of em)) for guitar would be the best. Guitar Hero is good but for those who play/own guitars you get to learn while playing games. Wadda concept . As far as others being excited about this release. I doubt many ever heard of it. I accidentally came accross this. Bet as soon as its made officially public the thing will sell out (if done right).

Also, it would be nice if you could import your own songs to play.

Sounds good. I hope that they add full chords however. It would give the game a lot longer shelf life.

This is gonna rule. I just hope there will be an option to import and create your own tracks then put them up for others to download ( kinda like frets on fire, or step mania) that would just blow my MIND!

I cannot believe more people arent excited about this game, I just recently started playing real guitar after kicking the crap out of guitar hero 3 and I cant think of a better way to learn how to play. I just hope that they deliver the goods because PC + Hazy Same year release date = questionable software!

Killer_Pickle - The iAxe is a USB Guitar, give it a google if you're bothered.

Personally I think this game sounds like fun, though I'm dissapointed that it doesn't support any advanced techniques or chords, bit of a let down there. This should give me a good excuse to dust off my old Ibanez and get playing again.

I have to say, if done properly, this is a great idea. Imagine all of the people who can never pick up a guitar because it isn't fun until they're good, and they'll never be good without picking one up. This gives them the option to become good by having fun. I know I will be following this to see how they develop it.

"Guitar Rising will let you plug any guitar of your choosing into your computer with a USB adapter." It lets you plug any guitar in with an included adapter.
