Guitar Hero: World Tour DE dropping Oct. 26 for $240

RedOctane.com says "deluxe" edition of rhythm game a pretty penny on PS3, 360; PS2 and Wii DE $220; but what does an extra $50 buy?

For months, Guitar Hero: World Tour has been at the top of many gamers' shopping lists. When it was revealed in May, the game leapfrogged its rival rhythm franchise, Rock Band, by introducing song composition and sharing, as well as out-of-the-box cymbal controllers with its drum set.

Today, Activision-owned RedOctane priced the "deluxe version" at $239.99 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions of the game, with the PlayStation 2 and Wii DE iterations ringing up at a moderately less pricey $219.99. This edition of the game includes the game software, a USB microphone, a five-pad drum kit with kick pedal, guitar and drum wireless receivers, two drumsticks, a Guitar Hero: World Tour guitar faceplate, a sticker pack, a guitar strap, a T-shirt (XL only), a dual recharge kit, a dual "gig bag," and a Guitar Hero keychain.

Given that the regular edition of the game costs just $189.99, the obvious question is--what exactly does the extra $50 buy? According to an Activision rep, not much. When asked what the difference was between the $239.99 edition of World Tour and the $189.99 standard-issue game, reps for RedOctane directed GameSpot to the Bestbuy.com product page, which lists only the game, faceplate, guitar, drum kit, and microphone as being in the bundle.

RedOctane.com lists Guitar Hero: World Tour as being available also in a deluxe guitar-only bundle for $109.99 for the PS3, 360, and Wii, with a PS2 variant costing $99.99. Ironically, the respective regular editions of the guitar-only bundle--which include the faceplate, sticker pack, and guitar strap--ring up at just $99.99 and $89.99. By that metric, the Deluxe Edition of the game is charging customers $40 for the recharge kit, gig bag, T-shirt, and keychain.

Commenting on the "Franchising Milking" Both the regular editions of Rock Band 2 "Special Edition," and World Tour "Deluxe Edition" cost $190, and $240 (rounded,) respectively on Gamestop. "Regular Edition" World Tour costs $190 (Rounded.)However, as you may remember the 360 battery charger cost $30 dollars on its own. So if Activision, charges the same, you so far are only unfairly paying $20 extra dollars. It will probably be sold separately eventually as well. I could care less about Faceplates, but it's in there, and it might be cool. Faceplates on there on own cost between $10-20. Lets be generous and assume they would sell it for $10 separately. Now you are unfairly paying an extra $10 dollars. The XL T-shirt, would likely sell separately for between $5-10, if they do. Being again generous we will say $5. Now you are unfairly paying an extra $5. The gig bag if sold separately would probably be on the Gamestop Wall/Site for somewhere between $10-30. Let's now be very generous and assume $10 retail. Now you are fairly spending $-5. Throw in the $1.99 key chain, and it's $-6.99. The important parts will be sold separately sometime. But if you want everything that is in the bundle you would be saving my estimate of $-6.99 retail. Remembering that was based on the most generous possible retail prices. So comparatively you aren't getting gypped based on other retail prices. I would also like to point out that the Rock Band 2 set includes: a "Cymbal Expansion Port," either you could be using a World Tour Set, or purchasing a $20 add on later. If you want the extra stuff, in today's retail market it's a fair price. And besides Guitar Hero has the right to exist. Rock Band blatantly copied the concept, and added in a bunch more stuff. One Rock Band 2 and World Tour have both been out for awhile. World Tour, will again do everything better.

Guitar Hero is the most blatant example of franchise-milking today, by far.
