Throwback picks up Acclaim properties

New publisher announces acquisition of Vexx, Fur Fighters, Extreme-G Racing, other dormant licenses.

The Acclaim name was brought back from oblivion last year, and it seems parts of its catalog are also returning to the limelight. The rights to hundreds of the publisher's games went up for auction late last year, and it appears Throwback Entertainment scooped up a few of the highest-profile franchises on offer. The Toronto-based publisher today announced that it has acquired the rights to a number of the defunct publisher's recognizable titles, including Vexx and XGRA: Extreme-G Racing Association.

"We are very pleased to have been afforded the opportunity to take these titles through the next generation, and onwards," the company said in a statement. "Many of the titles have all the elements required to establish franchises, with new services broadening the reach of games, Throwback will be well positioned for the expansion of the franchises."

The list of Acclaim titles Throwback now owns the rights to includes:

Aggressive Inline
Extreme-G Racing
Extreme-G 2
Extreme-G 3
Fur Fighters
Fur Fighters: Viggo's Revenge
Gladiator: Sword of Vengeance
Iggy's Reckin' Balls
Legends of Wrestling
Legends of Wrestling 2
Re-Volt
Showdown: Legends of Wrestling
Summer Heat Volleyball
SX Superstar
Vexx
XGRA: Extreme-G Racing Association

I hope they either make Vexx 2 or redo Vexx (not that there's much wrong with it) by giving it next-gen graphics and maybe new unlockable levels

Aggressive Inline was great. Especially it's stat-tracking system. Activision should borrow a page, you know?

Iggy's Reckin' Balls! I loved that on the N64. They should make a sequel of it on the Wii.

Why are they buying that showdown wrestling game when they don't even have the license anymore?

I look forward to possible new iterations to both the Extreme G series as well as to Aggressive Inline. In my opinion, Aggressive Inline is one of the best extreme sports games ever made. And I loved the first Extreme G.

Extreme G was one of the greatest racers in the Playstation/64 era, in my opinion. I'd love to see another game in the series. Aggressive Inline was fun as well.

Re-Volt is used during xbox live beta testing. It would be great if it came to xbox live arcade

I would love to see another version of Extreme-G hit any console, that game was tight. And I agree with JediBmoney, a version of Extreme-G for the DS would be awesome. Iggy's Reckin' Balls was kind of fun too. I'm hoping these games are available on the Virtual Console. But yeah, I can see why Acclaim tanked.

I have been waiting for news about Extreme G ever since Acclaim went under. It feels good to just finally actually hear something. I really hope we see a new XG title on one of the next gen consoles.
