Motor City Online going offline

EA will close the online muscle-car racing game in August and will offer to give subscribers a copy of another online EA game.

EA has revealed that Motor City Online's run will be coming to an end this August, and subscribers will be billed for the last time in July. The closure was attributed to the lack of growth in the game's community, and the development team that has been supporting Motor City Online will be assigned to other game projects. The Motor City Online team has posted more details on how the game will wrap up and on the history of the game.

The racing game, released in 2001, lets players customize and race classic muscle cars. For more details, check out our previous coverage of the game.

This game was truly unique. It was the first game I'd ever played that featured so many licensed classic and muscle cars. It still is the only game I've played where you could buy an engine block at the auction, choose which performance parts you want for it and stick it in whichever car you wanted. And the parts would wear out! It also had real dragstrip racing complete with xmas tree and redlights. It had so many things that I've never seen before it or since..

This game was very popular within it's niche. I absolutely loved every minute of this game.

I absolutely loved this game. Wish it would come back, that EA would realize they had a fan base for it and rerelease it.

EA Was Dumb To Take MCO Off Line
For What Reason Would You Develope A Game To Public
And Take It Off Line And It Be Non Playable What A Rip OFF
I Have Bought It Played It For 6 months And Loved It And Then They Decide
To Take It Off line And Now Its Not Even Playable, I Got Nothing In return
But A Bill And An Empty Wallet ....Thanks To EA Just A way To Get Your Money $$$$$$$$
    Pretty Sad EA. =(

Yes! EA really needs to have a MMOR Racer again. The Need For Speed series is fun but even with "maybe 6 online" with Need For Speed Carbon just won't do it for the legion of fans of MCO.

It was just ahead of it's time and a lot of people didn't even know about it or could find it.

Maybe Test Drive Unlimited will be the ticket although I will miss the Older Muscle Cars and environments.
