Atari hires Sam and Max

Second season of episodic adventures set for worldwide PC and Wii release in stores; publisher also reportedly picks up Brash's Tale of Despereaux.

Telltale Games' frighteningly amoral tag team of freelance police are ready to protect and serve (for a reasonable fee) once again. As part of a bevy of announcements, Atari announced this week that it would be bringing the second season of the downloadable, episodic adventure series Sam & Max to stores around the world next year.

Hurry up, they're gonna pay us in Euros!

Season 2 sees the cuddly yet violent detectives investigate a giant robot attack on their beloved city, perform an exorcism on Santa Claus, and even visit Hell, a heavily bureaucratic limited-liability company. As part of the international release, Sam & Max Season 2 will introduce full French and German translations to the episodes, as well as Spanish and Italian subtitles.

Season 1 of Sam & Max also made it to stores for the Wii and PC, courtesy of Dreamcatcher, The Adventure Company, and JoWood Group. For those who don't insist on a hard copy, all of Telltale's Sam & Max episodes are downloadable for the PC from the developer's Web site and from the GameTap subscription service.

Sam & Max aren't the only cute critter additions to Atari's lineup. According to a report in Variety, the publisher has picked up the just-released Tale of Despereaux games from the recently defunct Brash Entertainment. The Hollywood trade paper claims that Atari has snagged Brash's rights to the PC, PlayStation 2, DS, and Wii editions of the movie adaptation, while leaving the Xbox 360 version on the shelf.

    Sweet. The first season was great and I haven't played any of season two yet, but I've heard it's pretty funny.

    Unfortunately I still haven't picked up the first season for the Wii. From what I've seen and heard, it's definitely on my ever-growing list of games that I want to get this generation. I like the idea of the characters, and the humor that I've seen.

    I'll have to check this game out as well (assuming that the first season is as good as I think it will be). The stories seem really funny (exercism on Santa Claus FTW ), and I've heard that this season is supposed to be even better than the first. And of course, the gameplay seems well suited for the Wii.

    I loved season 1 and 2. But if im not mistaken, arent the game already available in retail boxes? Even the telltale website is selling the retail version. Whatever. They are, awesome games.

    After a long time of being close to death and releasing nothing but Dragon Ball games (the only franchise Atari still hold that was profitable), it seems like they are finally pulling their stuff together.

    Go Atari... after the long stream of studios closing, it is nice to see some quality resistance to go out without a fight.

    "leaving the xbox 360 on the shelf" ...and unfortunately the playstation 3 is missing too. I don't even know the Tale of Despereaux games, but I would like to see both seasons of Sam and Max on the 360

    I wonder why the people who did Season One on Wii couldn't have done Season Two as well... Well, it doesn't really matter, as long as I can get it and it's good.
