The Longest Journey becomes longer

Dreamfall Chapters to continue the story in downloadable episodes.

Back in 2000, the first instalment in the Dreamfall saga was released. Called The Longest Journey, it told the story of April Ryan, a student who had the power to shift between the two worlds of magic and science. A sequel followed in May 2006, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, which introduced us to Zoë Castillo, who finds herself also traveling between the two worlds to unravel a mystery and find a friend who has disappeared. However, the second game left many loose ends untied, leading many to believe there would be another episode in the epic adventure, although lead designer Ragnar Tørnquist wouldn't confirm anything.

But now Norwegian developer Funcom has announced that the series will continue, and that it has been awarded a grant by the Norwegian Film Fund, which the company will use toward researching and developing the story as Dreamfall Chapters.

Funcom's CEO, Trond Arne Aas, also hinted that a MMO version of April and Zoe's world might be coming, and commented, "We will be researching an online-only continuation of the epic Longest Journey saga, and we very much look forward to developing new chapters [for] the Dreamfall gaming community."

The company also stated that although the first phase of the game's release would likely be through downloadable episodes, following later in traditional boxed form.

Funcom commented on the content of the new title by hinting that the game would be the last in the series, and all the loose ends would be tied up in the upcoming episodes: "At the end of the road waits the greatest mystery of them all--one that will bring the groundbreaking saga to a surprising and stunning conclusion."

    I've been waiting to play The Longest Journey until these chapters had a release date, but this looks doubtful. It probably won't be out anytime soon, but if it is it will be a good surprise.

    Deathscyth-Hell is right. Dreamfall should not become an MMO. It has been so long since any news of Dreamfall Chapters.

    Dreamfall was -Easily- one of the best games I've ever played. Can't wait for this to come out. Practically did a happy dance.

    I hope its not an MMO... its very hard to tell a good story with a MMO, i prefer it to be an action/adventure like Dreamfall...

    Its Really Good To Know That This Series At Least Is Going To Come Back. Wish The Next One to Be Even More Mind blowing and With Another Powerful Story. Really Looking Forward For The Next One................... :-)

    I actually hope it won't be MMO, because I just enjoyed the quiet and beautiful adventure type of the game.

    i dont believe the lady dragon is dead because i heard wings flapping in the cutscene...

    and i agree that Brina Westhouse isnt really him, since at the beggining of the game, some creature from storytime was chasing after him

    I'm just glad that this series not going to be like all the other games series that never ended because they stopped making them. (E.g. Shenmue and Legacy of Kain)

    FlatchVeracruzl: Well, The Longest Journey fans had to wait for 6 years until Dreamfall came out. I'm not that surprised that it isn't out 1 year ever since it was announced.

    But I don't think April Ryan is dead. Wasn't it her destiny to eventual join the two worlds? Then I believe Lady Alvane, that you meet in TLJ is April Ryan in her old age.

    Dreamfall was great! Really can't wait for them to release this new type of distribution thingy... But it would have been surely better as a CD/DVD! Anyway, Dreamfall, TLJ and Funcom rule!!!
