Ubisoft taps Bulgarian talent

A new office in Sofia will expand Ubisoft's operations in Eastern Europe and initially focus on moving games to other platforms; new PC Rayman, console CSI confirmed.

French game developer and publisher Ubisoft has opened a new studio in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. The initial team of 21 will expand by an additional 40 members of staff before the end of the year, and will begin working immediately on a couple of newly confirmed titles, including a PC version of Rayman Raving Rabbids and "a console version of CSI: 3 Dimensions of Murder."

Eleven members of the new team, including manager Alexandru-Ion Radu, have been transferred from the Romania studio, where they worked on the Xbox 360 title Blazing Angels Squadrons of WWII. Ubisoft's executive director, worldwide studios, Christine Burgess-Quemard, stated that the Bulgaria office would be looking to tap into local talent, and that the studio is "part of Ubisoft's ongoing strategy to develop major titles internally, ensuring creativity and innovation."

The Bulgaria studio adds to Ubisoft's already sizeable suite, which boasts existing operations in France, Romania, Canada, Italy, and China. Ubisoft recently reported mixed financial results, with an increase in sales, yet a fall in profits, which the company attributed to higher costs associated with research and development for next-gen technology.

    Bulgaria is a great country (stupidly it makes me proud to be a bulgarian because of a large multi milion company that i like is opening an office there)

    hehe at last UbiSoft make a good thing, Bulgaria if full of great talent!!! There is another game made by Bulagarian team called Tsar and that was ok, it was ages ago tho....

    Good luck Ubi....hope the team makes good games....

    Ubisoft has definitely put out some good stuff lately, and i agree with i_got_you they put out way better games for the pc than EA, but I think they do so for consoles too. to ashcroft- i'm not bulgarian, but i do like seeing so much game development coming of east europe, really great games i think.. but still Blazing Angels wasn't much of a game...

    Ubisoft makes some of the best games ever, one of 360's element games is GRAW which is Ubisoft, then Ubisoft has ton more games for the 360 as well as Red Steel for the Wii and Rayman, as well as Assasin's Creed for the PS3. They beat EA in every type of game except for Sport Games al Maddens, FIFAs, NFSs, etc.

    Correction: Ubisoft = #1... WESTERN developer/publisher... VERY important to specify that... It only makes sense that Ubi officially sets up shop in Bulgaria, since Gameloft has been there for a few months now, and they usually share resources in their Eastern European studios.

    Not so sure, Squarephreak. Ubi is constantly releasing new IP and even if they are making sequels (PoP 1, 2, 3), each game is distinct from the previous one.

    On the contrary, I can already tell you that in 2009, EA will release a Madden, NHL, Baseball, Fight Night, Soccer, Football game. They will be the same as the ones made 5 years ago because the rules have not changed a lot.

    Ubisoft=#1 and everyone who knows anything about gaming should agree. I am consistently impressed with their ability to push the boundaries and create new standards for gaming. I know EA with its "Bread and Butter" games is quietly shaking in its big fat boots right now. Are you still not convinced? Well then just go check out the trailer for Assasins Creed.
